Unconventional Weaponry with the explosive dogslicer

Rules Discussion

I'm looking at taking a triggerbrand gunslinger and looking through the combination weapons. I one that intrigued me was the explosive dogslicer. I figuered I would need to either be a goblin with ancestal weapons or a human with unconventional weaponry. However when I tried to build it in pathbuilder it only let me take either the melee or ranged modes of the weapon with unconventional weaponry. Is this just a quirk of pathbuilder or is this how things are supposed to work.

Also a semi-related question. When using defensive armaments with combination weapons do both halves get the parry trait or only when wielding the weapon as a firearm.

Sounds like a pathbuilder quirk, it's a single weapon with two different uses. Otherwise, yes you're correct - since it's an ancestry based weapon, you do need one of those feats + firearm access to gain access to it.

I'd guess they built it into the system as two different weapons for gear purposes, because it would be easier to make two different vs making a new interface/button for swapping between two modes.

I assume defensive armamemts would only work when you're holding it in firearm mode, because it gives firearms the parry trait, and when you're holding it in melee mode it's a melee weapon. Kinda similarly how something that works with "two handed weapons" only works with Bastard sword if you're holding it in two hands.
