I'm sure this has been asked before (possibly by me even), but I don't recall the answer or the rules behind it.

If you critically fail against an affliction, such as a poison, disease, or curse, you move to Stage 2. My question is this: Do you suffer the effects of Stage 1 AND Stage 2 immediately? Or do you skip Stage 1 and only suffer the Stage 2 effects?

You suffer whatever Stage you go regardless how you got there.

p. 457 of Core has your exact question as an Example (critical fail vs. Initial exposure to Arsenic)

There's no notion that you progress stages one by one, only that critical success/fail progress/regress by 2 instead of 1.

So,if you go from 1 to 3 you suffer the 3 effect.
And if you go from 2 to 0 you cure yourself without going first through the 1st stage.

I concur.
Affliction Stages
You change to the new stage of the affliction, and then you suffer the effects of that stage (and only that stage).
