Skill ranks - easy question

Rules Questions

Hello everyone :)

As my first post, i am asking a question that may seem completely ridiculous to some, but i'm completely confused. (it happens)

Our DM decided last week that we were ending our D&D campaign and starting a Pathfinder (first edition) campaign. We spent a session creating characters, and i have the core rulebook so i've been doing a lot of reading.

My confusion is for the skill points that you spend when levelling up. Some of the other players said things that may have added to the confusion.

The question is as follows: When you have a certain amount of skill ranks to spend, is the cost of each point 1 for 1? For example.. let's say i level up to level 4.. and as a cleric i get 2 + 2 (int) + 1 (cleric) for 5 skill ranks.

If i want to pump them all into 1 skill.. let's say spellcraft because even though it's my class skill, i have 0 ranks, it would cost me 4 to get to rank 4 (can't go higher when i'm level 4), right?

If i want to pump them all into 1 skill i am untrained, it will still cost 4 to max it out?

I'm just confused because some folks mentioned something along the lines of ''first point costs 1, and then 2nd point costs something else''. Couldn't find anything along those lines.

Hope this is all clear, english is not my first language. :)

Thanks in advance.

Skills cost 1 for 1, and you are correct, you cannot use more in a single skill than your current character level. So 4 skill points spent to gain 4 ranks in a skill.

People talking about first point costing, 1, second costing 2, etc, are probably referring to the point buy system for stats. (Though those numbers are not actually correct for the point buy system).

Excellent, thank you so much for the quick response.

Sometimes when we are all learning the rules in a group, someone will mention something and confuse everyone else. I think that's what happened. here. :)

Relevant rules should be:

these ranks on skills, but remember that you cannot have more ranks than your level in any one skill (for a starting character, this is usually one).

When someone tells you that a rank costs more later on, it's their job to prove it with rules text.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

As someone else who has fairly recently transitioned from d&d 3.5 to pathfinder 1e I can say… skill ranks were one of the most confusing things for the transition… You get some used to 3.5 having you spend 2 points per rank in non-class skills and then the whole concept of retroactive skill points being entirely foreign as well… but after getting past the initial confusion from the transition pathfinders system is much better and easier to fully grasp… though there are still some parts of the rules that are needlessly complicated in pathfinder and were simpler in 3.5 (looking at you grappling)

Liberty's Edge

Some GM could limit how many points you can spend on one skill when gaining a level, but while sometimes it is logical (You really learned 5 ranks in Profession architect in one night?) it is an houserule.
