Liars gun

Rules Discussion

Just an observation that this thing is light as opposed to 1 bulk that the standard pepperbox is. You'd think it would be heavier since it has more barrels. It's magic I guess. Makes it even better.

Also, am I reading this right? 4 attacks in a 20 foot come with no map for 1 action? Against different targets but still, bullet dancer monk trying to flurry with pistols, eat your heart out.

Liberty's Edge

Psssst... don't tell anybody. ;)

Pretty close, yes. You would make all 4 attacks at current MAP (not zero MAP) and you would be at max MAP afterwards.

Also, for balance, it is a Cobbled weapon meaning that each of those Strikes risks misfiring. And each barrel would need to be reloaded individually - and possibly cleared of jammed ammunition first.

So for one action on one round, yeah that may be better than a Bullet Dancer Monk. On round 2 the Bullet Dancer dual wielding slide pistol or pepperbox is almost certainly going to catch up - and can focus fire one enemy.

The part that I find strange about the Liar's Gun is that the false barrels that it gets its name from have no mechanical effect. No ranged feint ability or anything like that.

We already have Ranged Trip so ranged feint doesn't seem out of line.

Yeah, that's what I meant. As for the bullet dancer, unfortunately they are limited to simple firearms. Even if you only get to attack 2 targets in your cone, it's darn good. Plus, you can dual wield them. Up to 8 attacks at full legendary bonus please. Over 2 rounds anyways. Gonna take a while for the monk to catch up, but in the meantime, they can beat people up with their guns more efficiently.

I guess that would be redundant with pistol twirl. It is weird though.

Still don't think it reaches the design ceiling of Monastic Archer Stance and flurry with a bow. Liar's Gun might have better burst damage though.

Hmm... I don't know. I thought there were plenty of times where equipment would give at least some of the benefits of certain feats and abilities.

You can Pistol Twirl with a hand cannon. Ranged Feint could be written to only apply to attacks with that weapon that allows the Feint action.

Yeah that's true. I was comparing it to bullet dancer as a conceptual comparison since they specialize in putting out a lot of firepower with guns. A one and done specific item isn't gonna break the class or anything. And Archer monks are very good. Monks also get a cone attack with current map now that I think about it. At 14th level with wild wind gust. A lot more repeatable than a liars gun so there you go.

And by that point, bullet dancers have bullet dancer reload witch keeps their stream of bullets pretty consistent.

Also the Liar's Gun won't carry Property Runes, and you do need four enemies in a tight formation. I wouldn't expect it to be one's primary gun either, so it might not even be in hand when you most want it. And often you'd need your other actions to draw and move to where you can hit four foes. While it's cool to get that effect from an item, there are feats (i.e. Ki Blast, Dragon's Rage Breath, or Eidelon's Wrath) that are more functional and came on a level earlier.

So yeah, in an optimum case, it's an optimum gun, yet how often that is will vary a lot and it won't scale that well.

(As a GM, I do foresee using this for baddies though, since parties nearly always enter in clustered groups of 4+...bwaa ha ha.)

You can if you so choose to shoot just 2 or 3 enemies. Have some ammo left over for next round to do it again.

But yeah, because it's a specific magic weapon, no property runes. Possibly the thing that makes you drop it by 12th level. But hear me out, a pistolero with showstopper at 14th level can hit all 4 targets flatfooted. Possibly the best use case for that feat.

Still confused as to why bullet dancer doesn't get dual weapon reload. The artwork shows a guy dual wielding for crying out loud. Only possible at 12th level with bullet dancer reload. But that still doesn't allow you to reload after flurrying since it's a specific flourish. A pistol and an air repeater is about the only option at that point.
