Plant eidolon tendril strike + merciless rend

Rules Discussion

Say you hit twice with your secondary attack with tendril strike at max reach, would merciless rend be applicable when you're not within reach of the target?

I am seeing no requirement in Merciless Rend about the enemy being within your typical reach.

Which would be a strange interaction if you somehow got a ranged slashing secondary attack...

But for Plant Eidolon and Tendril Strike I think it does and should work fine.

It probably works. The text doesn't specify that it "hits". If it did, I would say you're not in reach for that to happen. Text just says it does damage from your secondary attack.

As for the ranged attack you can get, it doesn't count as your secondary. Would be a cool interaction though.

The current ranged attack you can get doesn't count as your secondary attack.

This is one of those obscure hidden interactions that I could absolutely imagine a content dev forgetting about when creating new options for Eidolon secondary attacks.

That could happen. Although a huge plant eidolon can make rending attacks from 25 feet away. Not much shorter than the 30 feet that the ranged attack gets. Lol. If they add another ranged option, it would probably be a primary attack. Something comparable to a short bow with 60 range.

Anger phantom is likely the best option for rend though with access to heroism and consistent bonus damage from boost eidolon gives rend a lot more damage potential.
