Petition for Union Organizer archetype

As I mentioned in this waaay off-topic post, I wish to ask for a reconsideration of legality for an archetype.

Full disclosure, IRL I’m a proud Teamster. My son who also plays in SFS is a member of IATSE, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, and my parents and ex-wife are former AFGE members. I salute and congratulate the members of United Paizo Workers for their successful organizing effort.

So I have to ask why the poignantly topical Union Organizer archetype can’t be made legal? The archetype itself doesn’t seem to be excessively powerful, and the associated feats are all Society legal.

I understand that the prerequisite: “You must have paid dues on a union membership to take this archetype” isn’t tenable in worldwide Society play, but that doesn’t mean there can’t be a different prereq written specifically for Society play.

I propose: “You must have and maintain 1 skill rank per character level in a Profession skill. The Union that you organize for must be directly related to that Profession skill.”

This would impose an easily verifiable cost on the character, but one which is directly related to the archetype’s concept. Using the phrase “and maintain” ensures that the cost continues. Failing to maintain the skill rank progression would lead to loss of access to the archetype’s benefits. It would provide for a vast amount of role-play opportunities without being unbalanced by any means. And it would show IRL support for the UPW and other hard working union members worldwide.

I therefore hereby petition Org Play leadership to do whatever is needed to make the Union Organizer archetype Society legal somehow.

As the former State Secretary, then National Director of a Trade Union FSU I applaud the suggestion.

Frankly I think it needs to be a a Faction though, basically Space Andoran.

"Given that this is what my background has been before joining the Society, it'd be nice to actually, y'know, be this rather than kludge something together that 'looks' okay. Professional standards and all."

Jokes aside, while all the feats it could be used with are reasonable and legal, I think it increases the burden on the legality team going forward. Every time a new teamwork feat comes out, they have to ask "how does this work in isolation" and "how does this work with that one archetype.."

Although, without this archetype, teamwork feats are kind of .less than desired. I hope starfinder doesn't go the route of PF1 padding out options with teamwork feats no ones going to take.

Hello I am a proud union organizer and we're probably not going to make this archetype legal. I usually don't comment on why something is or is not made legal because that opens things up for a debate but what the hey, it's Christmas, you can have little a justification, as a treat:

- The prerequisite for this archetype is "You must have paid dues on a union membership to take this archetype." The union membership is a monthly payment and time is wibbly-wobbly in Organized Play, so we'd have to either figure out how to make this work or waive it.
- As published, this archetype actually has two 6th-level feats and no 4th-level feat. AoN appears to have decided that Welcome to the Team is a 4th-level feat; personally I am unaware of the official errata on that but without that, this would either need a clarification or just be clearly wrong.
- As BNW points out, this opens the door to having to evaluate any new Teamwork feats against it; minor issue but still adds complexity
- Also the 18th level Master Facilitator ability completely trivializes any Diplomacy encounter and alone is enough to earn this a ban.

Could we kludge some stuff together to make it work? Sure. Contrast with the Safety Inspector archetype, which also had the Union Membership pre-req that we just waived for Society play. But the OP team's role is not to write new rules content, it is to act as the GM and interpret existing content, and if we have to fully rewrite things to make 'em work, it's usually not worth our time to do so.

Oh, thanks for the notice on the Safety Inspector archetype, which will be just perfect for my icon Kobold Firefighter who will be all about promoting safety!

Alex, I want to thank you for waiving the normal rules about discussing why things get banned, for then presenting a complete and clear explanation, and for taking the time to do so over the holidays.

I really do appreciate that you chose to address this personally, and now I hope that you can get back to spending some quality time with your family.

Yep - thanks Alex! appreciate you sharing your thoughts on the dream, even if it shall not come to pass, and I also echo the sentiments about the Safety Inspector (already thinking of character ideas).
