So im not haveing as much fun with alchemical studies as I thought I would and while I'm sure it could be fun later on I belive I would have more fun if it were possible to maybe drop the alchemical role and substitute a magic book / crafting. I havent tried to do this before so im on the fence but I think I'd have more fun any input on how to do so would be greatly appreciated!!

Would something like the Eldritch Trickster racket for Rogue (just ported as an Investigator's Methodology) scratch that itch ?
The one issue you might have with it is trying to work Devise a Strategem into spells and not having it end up to be too powerful.
A level 2 Class Feat for it might be in line, but it's one of the reasons people consider Eldritch Archer + Investigator so good and that's a level 6 Class Feat (though it does give you spells AND the attack).
But yeah, I have been thinking something similar for a while, and I think it would bring a lot of fun to the Investigator in a better way than the rogue because of how each spell list choice would affect flavor so much.

Devise a Stratagem does not work with spells and TBH I am not sure it should.
Now, having the aforementioned homebrew methodology (Eldritch Detective ?) and Eldritch Archer or Magus MC Dedication might be worthwhile while not unbalanced.
Oh I'm aware it doesn't, I just presumed such a methodology would enable it in the same way magical Striker does.
Its not totally off based when you consider how eldritch archer effectively combines an attack and a spell, but that one has pretty limited action economy.
I mean maybe it shouldn't be done, but it would feel a little less cohesive without something even if it was a 6th level feat

I had not considered that. I would allow the Investigator to get the Spellstriker archetype feat at 2nd level if they chose the Magus MC Dedication.
Maybe open it as a 4th level class feat if they chose another MC Dedication. And allow it to be taken a second time for the Magus MC Dedication, so that you could use it twice within the 1 minute period.

Keep in mind that the investigator with alchemical science has some limits: They have to be alchemical Elixirs or Tool.
It can't craft them during daily preps with advanced alchemy, and have to expend 1 action to create the item and one to use it ( or let someone else drink it ).
Even if his progression is equal to the alchemist, his limits are extremely neat.
Here's Gisher chart for his progression.
I'd do something like this:
- I may give him the possibility to just cast divination or transmutation spells from the arcane spell list. No offensive spells ( spells which require an enemy to save or a spell attack ).- His spell progression would be 2 lower than a pure spellcaster ( so, by lvl 7 he'd be able to also cast lvl 2 spells ).
- I wouldn't give him the equivalent of the "alchemical discovery" class feat. 4/5 slots per day would be more than enough
- His proficiency would be using his class DC ( for counterattack purposes like an enemy dispelling his stuff ).
By lvl 11 he'd be able to cast fly 5 times per day, for example.
