So I did this fun little conversion thing back in 1e when the Hobbit films first came out, and I tried to stat them up in 1e, but going back over the films again, I think they actually work better as 2e characters. So over the course of the next little while, I thought I'd stat up some of the characters from Peter Jackson's Hobbit Trillogy.

Let's lay down some ground rules.
1)Yes, I'm using the movies. I am aware that the books are different and better and I am a philistine for using the books and I'm going to hell and yadda yadda yadda. The movies give us a lot more to go on, both in terms of what we see them doing and how we see them fighting. The movies did a lot to flesh out each dwarf and give them unique weapons and fighting styles, and I intend to use that.

2) Because Middle-Earth is NOT Golarion, I'm going to have to get a bit creative in what is where. I'm be trading around some prerequisites and shifting around some common/uncommonalities to represent both what we see and Golarion.

3) I know that Middle-Earth is a low-magic world, but to keep things in the same power range, I'm going to be giving the Dwarves appropriate leveled gear. Assume any items they have that are magical (that aren't sting or Orkrist) are just 'exceptionally made dwarven arms and armor) and count as the appropriate level of magic even if they aren't magical technically. I'll call out explicitly magical items.

4)Yes, I know I'm using the movies. We've been over this. I'm going to use the movies. If you want to make your own thread where you use the books, feel free.

5) I'm going to be starting each Dwarf off at level 4, and then include stat changes for levels 5 (Desolation of Smaug) and 6(Battle of the five armies). The exception is Thorin, who I will start at 6 and have him end at 8.

Halfway through the first movie, Thorin finds Orcrist, a +1 Striking Bastard Sword. The Weapon counts as having the Greater Fearsome Rune, but only against Goblins.

Level 7: Increase all level-dependent things by 1 except: Perception increases by 3 (Battlefield surveyor increases perception to master), and initiative increases by a further +2. Intimidate increases by 3 as it becomes Master (from skill increase), Dwarven Lore increases by 3 as it becomes Master (From additional lore). Damage increases by 3 with swords and 2 with everything else.

Unfortunately, Thorin looses his weapons and armor and has to make do with the human wares from Lake-Town. This reduces his AC to 24 as he is wearing Chainmail, and he looses his +1 striking weapons (just having a standard longsword). His speed increases to 25 through picking up the Fleet Feat.

Level 8: Picks up the Marshal feat "To Battle." Alignment briefly falters a bit, but eventually lands on NG. All level-dependent bonuses increase by 1. Thorin recovers a +1 striking Dwarven Longsword from the Lonely Mountain armory, and gains a set of +1 full plate from the armory as well (AC 27, 29 with shield, bulwurk quality). He also gets a Sturdy steel shield from the armory but immediately looses it. Lastly gains the Intimidating prowess skill feat. Eventually regains Orcrist

I’ve designed Kili with great effort. But to do so I had to redesign a feat.

Dwarven Weapon Familiarity (Middle Earth)
The Dwarves of middle earth tend towards different weapons than those of Golarion. This feat acts as Dwarven Weapon Familiarity except that Bastard Swords, Picks, and Mauls are considered simple weapons, not battleaxes, picks, and war hammers.

There are no Dwarven Urgoths. Instead there are Dwarven dueling swords, which are treated as Aldori Dueling Swords except that they have the Dwarven Trait.

Will post Kili tonight or tomorrow.

Level 5: Ability Score Increases: Strength, Dex, Int, Wisdom. Increase Trickery to expert, gain lie to me skill feat, gain rock runner ancestry feat, sneak attack increases to 2d6, weapon tricks class feature,(All proficiencies increase to expert, gains weapon critical effects when sneak attacking) looses all his gear to the elves. (

Level 6: Gains a chain shirt from the Lonely Mountain armory as well as both a +1 striking shirt sword and longbow. Gains the parting Shot from Archer archetype, Orc Lore becomes expert, gains Cognative crossover skill feat for both lore skills.

Reasoning: his poison resist but low fort save means that he is held up in lake town, unable to recover but not dying from the poisoned arrow. He starts off the series with a large sword, but rarely uses it. Since he is always two-handing it I made it a bastard sword, and predominantly focused on his archery. I made him a rogue because he truly is a skill monkey in the series, jovial, knowledgable, a good scout, and able to fell orcs in a single blow, which he can do thanks to mastermind. “That’s an orc-ranged sneak attack.”

Well, time to do Balin. I think out of all the Dwarves in the movies, he's my favorite. Something of a scholar and a thinker, he seems to GET it. He knows what his people need and what others need to be great (one of my favorite lines is "And I thought to myself 'there is one who I could follow. There is one I could call king.") He also seems more charismatic than the other dwarves and less prone to foolishness.

I built him out as an investigator to represent his thinking-man status. The only time we see him really fight is in Goblin-town where he's whiping his sword-mace around with great skill, so I decided to focus on that and make him a Dwarven (Aldori)Duelist. Remember the changes to the Dwarf Weapon Familiarity feat I made earlier.

I made him a bookkeeper even though he's more of an advisor because he seems to be the one to write up the contract and inspect it when Bilbo signs it.

He looses most of his equipment when captured by the elves. When in Lake-Town he gets a Chain Shirt and a shortsword.

Balin is able to raid the armories of Erabor once it is retaken and gains a new +1 striking Dwarven Dueling Sword*, as well as a set of Dwarven studded leather armor.

*Dwarven Dueling swords have the same stats as an Aldori Dueling sword, but have the Dwarf trait.
*Treat a Dwarven Duelest as an Aldori Duelist except entrance requires being trained in Dwarven Dueling swords and you have to be from Erabor or the Blue Mountains in order to gain access.

Liberty's Edge

I’m late to this party, but these are very cool builds. Thank you for sharing!
