Sword that cast truestrike formulae?

Rules Questions

If I were to make a sword that cast truestrike on a command word with 50 charges what would be the cost and formulae?

Depends.

Are you asking for a command word that takes a standard action? I'd just charge you 750gp (the cost of a wand) and be done with it. Maybe double that, but meh. That's not the official forumla, but it's really not much more lowerful than a wand, so whatever.

If you're asking for free action activation so you can get +20 on any attack then I think it'd follow the enhancement bonus formula of <bonus-squared × 2 × 1,000gp>. Since True Strike is a +20 bonus that's <20^2 × 2 × 1,000 = 800,000gp>. I might give it to you for half since it's not a permanent bonus, but 50 charges is enough to last to level 20 if you only use it in important combats, so I'd probably keep it at full price (eg. Not attainable).

It's very easy to break the crafting rules with spells like True-Strike. I would most likely not allow a custom True-Strike item to be crafted without serious limitations.

Thank you sir, that was my thought as well....but my youngest son wanted an outside ruling.
Once he created a ring that summoned spell level appropriate to.caster level monsters every time we entered combat, natural born Impossible sorcerer that one...

Yeah.

The first rule of custom magic items is: Look to see if there's an item that does something similar. If there is, use that as a pricing guide. So for items that increase your attack bonus the first place to look is the usual prices for magic weapons.

I could potentially see a 1/day enchantment that lets them activate it as a swift action True-Struke. I'm really not sure how I'd price it though, probably at least a +2 enhancement bonus (pricing it as a +x bonus means that it makes all other enhancements more expensive, rather than even a flat +20,000gp which would eventually be cheaper than the +x enhancement cost).

Your son is very creative, and should he put his mind to other aspects of the game I'm sure he'll make you proud, but this is one loophole that's closed by the Ask Your GM rule.

The Exchange

Is he looking for a sword that he can use to cast true strike? (So he doesn't have to use his spell slots or hold a wand in one hand.) If so, I'd just point him at the weaponwand spell.

Or is he wanting the item to do the casting for him? If so, I wouldn't allow it at all. The only thing that keeps true strike from being overpowered is action economy. Having to use a standard action to cast it.

A weapon or other item that provides true strike without requiring the bearer to spend actions is the example I always use of why the "Estimating Magic Item Gold Piece Values" table in the CRB is a set of guidelines and not an absolute set of rules. Because if you stick to those guidelines you can end up with a sword that casts true strike on every swing for 12,000 gp. Or bracers that provide continuous true strike for 8,000 gp.

Math:

*Use-activated or continuous effect = Spell level x caster level x 2000 gp
*Multiply by 4 since the duration is measured in rounds.
*Multiply by 1.5 for a second effect since you are adding it to a (presumably magical) sword

1 x 1 x 2000 x 4 x 1.5 = 12,000 gp

Having to use a standard action and having to actually make the attack within next round.
