Shisk Barbed Quills Ability and Wild Shape

Rules Discussion

For those of you who have the new Mwangi Expanse book, I have a question: does the Shisk Barbed Quills ability work with Wild Shape? The Polymorph trait says you can only use attacks granted to you by your new form. However, Barbed Quills isn't an attack, it's a reaction to a successful attack against you. So, would it work while you're Wild Shaped?

I'd say this means no, since you're no longer a Shisk. I will admit to not being sure on this one though, you're right it doesn't seem to be an attack.

You should lose any abilities that relied on your previous form. So you would lose Shisk Barbed Quills, as well as things like Fly speeds if you were a Strix, or water breathing if you were an Azarketi (assuming the new form doesn't have it).

Ok that makes sense, thanks. Too bad, I was thinking it'd be cool to play a wolf, snake, bear or other animal with porcupine-like quills!

Should. Yes.

But I am not seeing anything in the Polymorph trait that says that you actually do lose anything from your normal form, such as fly speeds or water breathing.

There's always, if you aren't playing PFS, talking to your GM and seeing if they're cool with that.

Correct.

For some things it is pretty obvious that you should lose it. But it is not always clear. The rules don't give any real guidance.

Answer is going to vary depending on GM.

For some things, like movement speeds, attacks and Senses, the rules are clear because it specifically states what you get in the battle form. Things like Barbed Quills, or resistances you get from your Ancestry (fire, cold and poison seem to be popular) are less clear. Like Gortle said, neither the Polymorph trait nor the Animal/Insect/whatever form spells say you lose these things. Seems to be a gray area.
