It's as "optional" as archetypes are: you don't HAVE to use them for any character but they are indeed a part of the game but do not have to be picked by the character. It's NOT the same as Variant Rules which are opt in rules from the DM. Optional choices from the player aren't the same as optional choices from the DM no matter the interpretation or what you call it. So it it's semantics to you, I can only say you're looking at it wrong IMO.
