I've done a search on the subject and I can't find an answer. Is there an official answer to the question of whether you can use a touch spell that targets an object and place it on an attended object with a melee touch attack?
Specifically, I'm wondering if a creature can cast darkness and then use a melee touch attack to apply the darkness spell to an opposing PCs weapon or shield or some other object. If there's no official word on this, what would be the general consensus on this idea?

Attended, nonmagical object use their attender's saves to resist, but darkness doesn't have a save. It also doesn't have Spell Resistance. Next thing is that you need to hit touch. Since it's attended, it uses the wielder's Dex and dodge if they aren't Flat Footed, uses its own size (probably a dimunitive object so +4), the wielder's deflection bonus (if it has one), and that's literally all that applies to touch AC. If you hit that, its dark, but your opponent probably saw what you touched (sleight of hand check maybe), and can just take that item and chuck it 20+ft away.

The creature will already have cast darkness on their own weapon so I think the PC would have to make a Spellcraft check in order to tell what spell it is. However, after the creature moves away from the PC, it will likely be obvious what the effect is.
As for throwing the item away, I doubt that the PC would throw away their magic shield or weapon.

Thank you for mentioning this. I was going to reply that they wouldn't do that during combat. Then I started thinking about the PCs. I realize that 3 of the 4 PCs have alternative attacks and the 4th is a dwarf so darkness won't affect him. The creature cast darkness on its own longspear before combat but maybe casting darkness on the PCs isn't such a good idea after all.

A better way of doing it is to just cast darkness on a throwing weapon or ammunition and hit the opponent. Assuming we use Burrowing Shot as a model, the person struck would have to spend a standard action to remove the weapon/ammo and then they could chuck it, but you've basically just eaten an entire turn if they remove it immediately.
