Dhampir post ancestry guide

Pathfinder Second Edition General Discussion

The Exchange

Now that the Ancestry guide is out and players have access to the new lineages there is something im curious about. it appears that players who created a Dhampir prior to the release of this book are locked out of certain feats. Take the 5th level feat Taste blood. This feat requires: Cel Rau, Straveika, Svetocher, or another lineage from a vampire with the Drink Blood ability. Without benefit of a lineage feat players have no mechanical way to determine which vampire species they descend from and therefore no way to pick up this feat.

True by RAW. Now there is always the Ask your GM nicely solution.

I mean, this is bound to happen. Sometimes, new feats have prerequisites that previously made characters don't have. Only some previously-made dhampir characters would be locked out of that feat, though, since the Straveika and Svetocher lineages are from the APG.

Still, if you want that feat, I'd talk to your GM. The main point of the prerequisite seems to be to avoid Ru-Shi and Adhyabhau dhampirs drinking blood (since their lineage doesn't drink blood at all). Some GMs might require that you have a lineage feat as a sort of tax, others might be open to letting you take the feat without it. You might also convince your GM to just let you change your 1st level feat. As The Raven Black said, just ask nicely.

Is it absolutely the case that "lineage" refers specifically to "has a lineage feat"? Is there any reason why you couldn't determine your character has a particular lineage without taking the lineage feat?

You cannot just give yourself traits or prerequisites for free. It is pretty clear what the intent is here.

"LINEAGE FEATS
Some ancestry feats within a versatile heritage have the lineage trait. These feats specify a physiological lineage your character has—such as the type of hag that birthed a changeling character, or the type of fiend that influenced a tiefling’s birth. You can have only one lineage feat; you can select such a feat only at 1st level, and you can’t retrain into or out of this feat."

My advice is to ask the GM directly rather than trying to hoodwink them with "well it doesn't say that I can't just call myself of a certain lineage without taking the associated and named lineage feat for a prerequisite". That sort of behaviour and asking a GM to prove a negative is more likely to make them lese cooperative than more.

I think that RAW you need one of the lineage feats, as it says the prerequisites are "Cel Rau, Straveika, Svetocher, or another lineage from a vampire with the Drink Blood ability" not "you are descended from a Cel Rau, Straveika, Svetocher, or another lineage from a vampire with the Drink Blood ability", implying that you need the feat with one of those names. Your character can very well be descended from a Cel Rau vampire, but you can't qualify for Taste Blood without the feat.

In a home game, even though Lineage feats by RAW can only be taken at 1st level, it would be very reasonable to permit a retcon to replace a 1st level ancestry feat with an appropriate lineage feat on the grounds that you would have taken that feat at 1st level had it been available. You would probably be out of luck in PFS though.

I would recommend talking to your GM.

For organized play you might be able to purchase one of the following boons:
Career Change Rebuild a PC who has 48 or more XP (level 5+)

Evolving Destiny Rebuild a PC who has 47 XP or less (i.e. level 4 or lower)

ACP adds up pretty fast, especially if you GM.
