Some thoughts on monks

Hey there, it's the first post i make on this forum, so i hope i'll make this right, sorry in advance if i mess up or something.
I was reading the new playtest with the gunslinger and an old fire woke up in me.
Why the Gunslinger get the fighter profency progression(I get it, and it make sense to me, firearm are the focus of the gunslinger)but the monk get the same progression of everybody else with the unarmed attack ?( i mean, fist are the focus of the monk, no ?).
To be clear, monk is my favorite class so i have a bias, but if fighter get to leggendary with every weapon (including unarmed), the gunslinger with the firearm, mage get to leggendary with arcane spell and monk get leggendary... in AC, make sense. But why don't give the player a choice, like at the start you have to option to choose between AC expert prog. or unarmed attack expert prog. so you get to be legendary in one or the other (similar to the path of perfection option sistem).
Again, i have a bias toward monk and i know this but i had those thoughts for while so i build up my courage to make this post.
Thanks to everyone for making this amazing game, realy.
p.s. (as you can see english isn't my first language sorry)

Gunslingers can have legendary attacks since their weapons are unwieldy and need to be reloaded. Their damage is also somewhat low and they rely on their fatal trait for much of their damage so they need the additional crit chance to shine. They would probably be weaker than bows if it wasn't for the Gunslingers increased proficiency. Kinda makes you wonder how well they'll work for non-Gunslinger.

Giving Legendary unarmed proficiency to the monk, who can easily attack 4 times per turn (5 with haste) while also having agile d8 attacks with additional benefits would push them too far ahead.

A fighter with monk dedication using something like wolf stance with flurry of blows and Agile grace deals very high amounts of damage. You just don't see something like that often because the slow progress on unarmored proficiency turns the whole thing into a rather brittle glass cannon.

I know you're right, but i can't help but feel like the monk lack something.
As you said the slower unarmored proficiency (like in the fighter in your example) will turn the monk in a glass cannon, but I'll realy like to have that choice, to be a better damage dealer with less AC or having a better AC to go in and out of the fight but with less precision and less damage. I think i can go hand in hand with the choice to use STR or DEX as a key ability

They have the second highest AC in the game (and can match the highest with mountain stance), best mobility, great stances, the best single target attack, good useage of maneuvers and some very awesome Ki Powers.

They are basically great at everything. They aren't the best damage dealers, but they are still pretty good at it.

Being capped at Master unarmored defense would (eventually) still gives them the same AC as most other martials. They REALLY shouldn't have legendary proficiency.

Also, you can probably pull something quite similar off with a fighter who gets Monk Dedication, if you really want to.

Once again, you are right, on paper the monk look and sound amazing, but everything he does, there's someone else who do it better.
So much so that when i had the choice to play a fighter or a monk i decided to do a fighter with the martial artist dedication and i'm realy having fun with it, but at the same time i feel i litle bit sad about it. I spent some time thinking about how to play a monk and at the end my conclusion was to capitalize on flurry of blow, guarded movement and the monk mobility (EDIT): so the turn will be something like stride in, flurry, stride out of combat. It's nice and i'm going to play it for sure, but for the moment i didn't finde the right niche for the monk in the party, if you have let me know, realy love to have your opinion on this.

I don't think this is true. His mobility alone is unmatched.

Some more thoughts, mostly focused on things you can't easily get via Monk Multiclass:

- He the best (and only) super sayan in the game.

- Prevailing Position and Impossible Technique are a ridiculously good defensive abilities, especially ON TOP of some of the best defenses in the game. The same goes for Enlightned Presence and Diamond Soul.

- The good old combination of Stunning Fist, Tangled Forest stance, Stand still and a Bo (for reach and trip) is one of the best lockdowns in the game and covers a good area. Yes, you can get those things via multiclassing, but they come very late this way and since multiclass is capped at trained for the monk class DC, it wouldn't be nearly as effective.

- The Monk has pretty good area attacks for a martial. Whirling Blade Stance turns your Nunchaku into a chain lightning. Wild Wind Gust is basically the Barbarian's Whirlwind Strike with a much better to handle area (not to mention it costs only two actions).

If all you want to do is punch things, other classes can match him, yes. But focusing on that really misses a LOT of things the monk can do.

Nice, i will study some of your ideas. I think my problem is that i grow up watching Fist of the North Star ahaha.
In your opinion what's the role a monk in a party?

Whatever you want him to be, really. A monk can be a good tank, damage dealer or controler. He only sucks at healing and buffing. You can probably even do those with some archetypes (Medic, Marshal) if you want.

Just be sure to pick one or maybe two of those things and stick with them. You'll spread your feats too thin of you try to many things at once.

If I had to pick just one thing, I'd say his best role is probably control. Trip/Grapple plus stunning fist plus his high mobility can really mess with the enemies and soften them up for the rest of the party.

Nice, thanks for the advice, real pleasure
