So, for my first character I took a feat (skill synergy) which through level advancement became useless (as a Mystic I got insight bonuses to the skills I had chosen that obviously do not stack with skill synergy). I knew twigged to this early on but kept putting off getting a mnemonic editor. Now the character is level 9. Retraining is clearly out, as it not allowed in society. Mnemonic editor as I understand it is also out, as you can only re-do the advancements from the last two levels. I think I understand this but want to confirm I'm SOL.

Yeah, Starfinder doesn't have the same ability to Retrain as Pathfinder does:
In general, decisions made about your character when leveling up are permanent; you can’t go back and change his ability scores, feats, skills, and so forth later on. For characters who desperately want to change their past and replace abilities, however, there is a technological solution: the mnemonic editor, a device by which old knowledge and abilities can be edited out of your character’s brain and permanently replaced with new ones, thus allowing you to partially rebuild your character—with your GM’s permission, of course. For more information, see the device’s description on page 226.
There is a new book coming out next summer. Maybe it will have some new rules?

Oh. One other possibility.
We know that SFS is getting Achievement Points (AcP) eventually. I believe they'll be implemented by the end of this current Season, assuming everything finishes on time.
PFS2 has a Rebuild Boon that costs AcP. Right now you can either Rebuild a PC under Level 5 for a small fee, or Level 5+ for a larger fee. Perhaps SFS will offer something similar.
And if AcP credit is retroactive to SFS's inception, you'll already have the points to purchase the Boon.
