Wayfinder upgrade PFS2e

Pathfinder Society

2/5

A wayfinder is free now according to the new boons. It also states in the rules that you can upgrade a wayfinder. As I got the archaic wayfinder (reduced cost 25gp) on a boon, how much would the upgrade be? Also, from another chronicle I have wayfinder of rescue as access. Can I upgrade my wayfinder twice? And at what gp cast? And then make it adamant as my character is Vigilant Seal?
Thanks for your help.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

As of the recent Core Rulebook errata, you may now "upgrade an item from a lower-level version to a higher-level version" by simply paying the difference (or via Crafting).

The example given is upgrading a Bag of Holding, Type I into a Bag of Holding, Type II, so upgrading your regular Wayfinder to any higher level version should work, too.

But as for how much you pay... I'm not sure. A regular Wayfinder is 28gp, which is more expensive than the reduced price of the Archaic Wayfinder. Acquiring it with AcP only affects its resale value, not its inherent value.

Which leads us to the weird interaction of getting a 3gp refund for upgrading =\

I'd suggest just going ahead and buying the Archaic Wayfinder separately and upgrading it to higher level versions as you level up. They're negligible Bulk, and then you can have one for your Aeon Stone and one for a light source.

Just to make sure, I could have an archaic, vanishing, elemental wayfinder of rescue all in one?

I don't think so. The named versions are not like runes, so I don't think you can mix/match them.

Also I'm not sure you can lean on "upgrade an item from a lower-level version to a higher-level version" to cross-grade a wayfinder from an un-named one to a named one. The Upgrades that the CRB were talking about is when there's multiple levels of a single item -- all versions are in a single Item Stat block. The wayfinders on the other hand are different items, not upgraded versions of the base one.

I know there's a boon or two that let you upgrade, but those boons would have their own rules provided. I'm trying to track down the OP's claim of "It also states in the rules that you can upgrade a wayfinder" to see where that comes from and what it authorizes.

Hmm, might be a bit more ambiguous than I thought.

We know that the retired rewards (fame) and current reputation rewards allowed (free) stacking of the faction specific versions of wayfinders.

Season 2 Guide, Reputation Boons

Guide says wrote:

"Special: You can apply multiple upgrades to a single wayfinder. Each upgrade only affects one wayfinder in your possession, chosen when the boon is purchased. If a wayfinder has multiple upgrades on it, you can only safely use each ability once per scenario.

If the wayfinder with this upgrade is destroyed, you can apply the upgrade to another wayfinder during Downtime for no additional cost beyond that of the wayfinder itself.

Here the guide is using "wayfinder" in a collective sense, since its not limiting the free boon-based upgrade to an unmodifed wayfinder. So you _can_ stack Harmonic & Esoteric for instance.

Talking with some other VOs, sounds like the current understanding is that

a) you can stack the faction based ones (fame/reputation) on any form of wayfinder (base or named), because of the "Special" clause.

b) You can't stack the non-faction based ones.

c) You can't upgrade using the CRB errata between unnamed and named.

C doesn't seem correct.

The Wayfinder entry uses the same format as other items with multiple versions (it's listed as "Level 2+") and the Errata is broad in scope.

I can understand not being able to upgrade one named Wayfinder to another, but I see nothing preventing you from upgrading the base version.

A. You can stack the faction based ones (fame/reputation) on any form of wayfinder (base or named), because of the "Special" clause.

Guide team actually asked about this. I can confirm it is correct.

B. You can't stack the non-faction based ones.

They are not described as "upgrades" they are separate named items. As such, they cannot be combined, any more than you could combine Spined Shield and Lion shield to make a Spined lion shield.

C. You can't upgrade using the CRB errata between unnamed and named.

Actually, they are both named. But the CRB errata and the permission that came with it was explicitly limited to upgrading between levels of an item, not upgrading an item to a different item that has all the same sub features. (as in PFS1. Note that even in PFS one, upgrading is doubtfull since many of the advanced wayfinders *replaced* features of the base wayfinder)

As the rules currently stand, you cannot upgrade a wayfinder from one to another. There is (however) a quest(? I think ?) boon that allows you to upgrade one. It is specifically called out as being a new, experimental, thing in the adventure, as I recall.

None of this should prevent people advocating that the rules be changed, this is however the current state of the rules.

Personally, I think everyone should be allowed to sell back any basic wayfinders they bought at full price, given that everyone in the society now gets issued a wayfinder for free.

I would also like to see a boon that lets you upgrade your base wayfinder for a discount.

Alternately if enough people complete the quest in question maybe the "technology" for upgrading wayfinders could become common enough to be widely available...?

Also I now want a custom Spined Lion Shield item, because the name just sounds cool. If I GM an AP, it may sneak in there...
