Rogue+Animal Companion

Advice

#Aladdin's Project:
Rogue + Pet (Monkey)

Is it possible for me, being a Rogue, to train an animal, a Monkey (Abu) to "help" me in combat by administering Healing Potions? Giving him this Command, this action trained emergencyly? How do I trigger my Character to drop to 0 HP?
I thank you for your attention.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I am not sure how you could to it with an animal companion, but take the Familiar Master Dedication (In the APG) at 2nd level and choose the Manual Dexterity familiar ability, which grants your familiar the ability to use mantipulate action like Interact.

For the future, threads about character builds should be posted in the Advice Forum (I recomend reading all the forums description before posting).

With Beastmaster dedication at 2nd level, having an Animal companion is possible. So is the selection of an Ape, or Monkey companion.

The rest is GM FIAT, however, as there aren't rules for animals being able to hold or carry anything, nor are the rules concise enough on their own to permit them to work objectively.

In my eyes, a Monkey companion most certainly can carry and use things like most Humanoids can. But, most animals require commands to perform certain activities, and the rules objectively state this. As such, even if it's possible to train them, the rules state that you must issue the command for them to follow it. If you are unconscious and/or dying, you probably cannot issue such a command, and so the animal companion acts based on instinct instead of training.

But that's my take on it. YMMV.

The RAW answer is no, barring your GM stepping in to make an exception.

Animal Companions cannot use or Activate Magic Items that lack the Companion Trait and Potions lack this Trait and therefore are explicitly prohibited from doing this.

Expect table variation. If you take the animal training trait and account for the training, the GM might be more likely to allow it. You’ll have to have a trigger that is reasonable for the monkey to recognize. Something like if you fall down, which admittedly can be problematic, but I doubt many will allow the monkey to know the difference between living vs dying, conscious vs unconscious, etc. It’s also problematic in that the rules only allow companions to take actions when you give them, so more often than not, the GM is going to say no.
