Ring of Lies is broken, right?

Rules Discussion

Specifically, I'm pretty sure they forgot to aad a once per day frequency to the activation entry. At will glibness is absurd. The +4 status bonus completely overshadows the item bonus.

I haven't fixed it with house rules yet because generally infiltration shenanigans are fun and hard to pull off and I don't mind them getting a boost, but I can't imagine this was intended compared to other items.

It's not in line with other items of its level in that regard no, but the Greater Spectacles of Understanding also offer effectively a continuous spell effect (granted a level 2 spell). At least it's uncommon and will only come up when players are browsing for items.

Relative levels is only part of it though-- not all spells are equal in their applications. Comprehend Languages doesn't do anything that can't be done by selecting the right languages as you build your character, and you generally know exactly when you need to use it.

Glibness is a huge math shifter on top of whatever you already get for your build. It is balanced by its limited duration and the fact that it won't always be obvious when you need to use it, and casting a spell while you're already mid conversation is hard. The ring lets you bypass both of those are restrictions.

Dimension Door is a 4th level spell, too. The Cape of the Mountebank is also 10th level but only lets you use Dimension Door once. The Ring of Lies would still be a better item for a liar even at once per day activation, honestly.

There is no Ring of Lies.
There is no Glibness.
In fact, this discussion thread does not exist.
Now tell me, how many lights do you see?
