So since Field Agents can't retrain into a school for free, I'm planning on doing it the old fashioned way. I just need a question answered as far as
I start retraining Scenario 1: I have 12 days so I use them all to retrain. Check.
Scenario 2: I have 2 days left to retrain and then I am done. So since I am no longer a field agent, do I only have 6 days left or do I get another 12 days since I started downtime as a field agent?

When I went the other direction:
8 Days on the first chronicle
6 days on the next, 2 days left. People thought those two days should get the 50% bonus -- 3 days.
Following that same theory:
12 days on the first chronicle
2 days on the second which are equal to 1.33 non-field commissioned days. Probably treated as 2 days since you can't spend fractional downtime. Leaving you with 6 days to spend as a regular agent.
It ends up with the your 6 days possible answer, but for a different reason I think than you were using.

I have no strong opinions. And I am on vacation and too lazy to look up in the guide.
But I would go look at the part of retraining in the Guide that talks about retraining class features, and where in the process you loose access to the abilities of the feature you are training out of. That *should* give you the answer.

Ok so this is what the guide says in that area (if I have the right area of course):
An option being retained is lost at the time the new option becomes usable.
So the option of going from Field Commission to School trained would occur on day 3 of downtime (in the example given). On that day, the character would have only 8 days of downtime, of which 2 have been used for training. Leaving 6 days for another downtime activity.
So what Eric said above seems to be the correct answer.
