investigator vs mastermind rogue

I feel like these two characters, on certain levels, compete against eachother within a party dynamic.

but i feel maybe because investigator is more focused, that it does the job better, while i guess the rogue has higher damage potential.

investigator, most notably, gets some pretty big action economy improvements as well as limitations.

devise stratagem/known weaknesses.

its either a 1 action or free action to do what amounts to 2 actions. but you are limited in that your precision (sneak) attack damage is only with one strike. that will leave you with 1-2 actions left that you can either at tack with (not a terrible idea even if you dont get precision damage) or do something else. also if your devise stratagem roll is low, you have 2-3 actions where you may not want to attack. its wonky but flavorful and while it achieves master proficiency its not a damage first chassis.

the rogue however is much simpler, achieve flat footed, get sneak attack damage on every attack that lands. you can get multiple ways to get at least 1 attack with sneak attack precision damage via feats as well. so up until you flank or get opportune backstab at 8, your damage probably wont be always substantially better than the investigator. Also investigator makes for a pretty good ranged support character while rogue struggles with that more i find.

the rogue is typically a better face in the stat budgets i allocate because you dont have to worry about intelligence, even a mastermind, i havent seen a real reason to run it outside of higher bonus to recall knowledge rolls, wich while a part of its racket, dont really seem to do anything else for the rogue. but you could go 16 in intelligence and only be 1 behind the investigator on those rolls typically.

but you dont get any action economy benefits with recall knowledge.

looking over mastermind feats as well, not a lot sticks out (unless i missed something feel free to point it out).

so whats your take? is mastermind kinda redundant with the existance of investigator? or is mastermind just investigator light for when you want to attack more than once per round?

The two fulfill a lot of the same party roles outside of combat, and even some of the same stuff in combat, but so do Bard and an Occult Sorcerer. Having both in the same party is redundant to some degree, but they're two different ways of going about the same general thematic archetype and having both available so people can choose which one they prefer to play as is useful.

So I wouldn't have both in the same party in most games, but do feel that both are fine options and allow for different mechanical implementations of similar thematic concepts.

One is Sherlock, the other Moriarty. I don't think they get along well together, but they are both interesting in their own ways.
