Magical Shorthand Explanation.

Hello,

It is possible someone can give me a layman's Explanation of Magical Shorthand.

I have a player who is trying to use it. I understand that it allows you to learn a spell that you do not know. But what are they roll, how much are they spending per spell? Is it the price of the spell and the price of the learn a spell fee? Can a learn multiple spells during one 8 day downtime? Can the Discount in price be carried over to Multiple spells learned?

Thank you

Nathan

There’s a lot of ambiguity there. It’s unclear if it’s one roll or two (that is to say, if the Roll to Learn the Spell is the same as the Earn Income roll or not). It is also unclear if the Task Level is based on the spell or is the standard character level -2, min 0.
The short version is: they are rolling to get a discount off the normal cost to learn a spell (which is 2gp for a 1st level or cantrip, 6gp for a 2nd level spell, etc).
Unclear on if you can learn more than one spell during downtime.
If you *can* learn multiple spells during downtime, the discount would be a total amount, not a per spell discount. It should be comparable to other Earn Income uses in terms of money saved.

I do know that it is at the PFS task level of -2. That has been discussed on the Discord.

There has been long discussions about this, both in the rules section and the PFS section.

There is no real consensus on how it works, especially in PFS.
