Let's Talk Grappling Hooks

Hi, Everyone.

I'm GMing a game and Wednesday the players, which are all new to PF2, will encounter a situation where they must either climb a 15-foot wall or a 30-foot cliff. The DC for the cliff is 18 and I'm guessing the wall is around 30. I'm guessing at least one player will use a grappling hook so I'm preparing for that, but the information I'm finding isn't very specific. What bonus will a grappling hook provide to climing the cliff and wall?

In the 'Core Rulebook' (p. 290) it says a grappling hook "make[s] the climb easier."
The climbing kit (p. 289) says it includes a grappling hook, but it doesn't give a bonus to climb unless it's the Climbing Kit Extreme that gives "+1 item bonus to Athletics checks to Climb."

Any thoughts on the bonus of just a grappling hook?

Thanks.

Look on page 242 of the Core Rulebook.
That's the Athletics skill checks section.

There's a table that gives you the DCs of various climb and swim checks.

One of the "trained" actions is to climb a rope for Athletics; so I would rule you have turned whatever normally difficult climb in to just needing trained. I would also give them the +1 to Climb.

Liberty's Edge

As others said the Grappling hook wouldn't directly help them with their roll but it would INSTEAD change the DC to that of the Athletics Check to Climb the Rope instead of the more difficult one to scale the Cliff/Wall without tools/by-hand.

I'd personally use the DC 15 for it being a Trained equivalent task according to the Athletics Skill and the Simple DC table from the GM Chapter. A success means they climb 5ft per 20ft of their Land Speed, failure they don't make any progress, crit fail they fall down, crit success they climb 5ft + 5ft per 20ft of their Land speed. This is per individual Climb Action (1 Action Skill Usage) so they could almost certainly climb from the bottom to the top quickly enough in one-two rounds.

Essentially this takes if from an 18-30 to a flat 15 to do so that' actually a REALLY big improvement for them in either case. Climbing a Rope is pretty well codified and with the use of the Simple DCs it can help you cut-the-fat really easily.

But what is the DC to anchor the hook properly? You don't just throw a grappling hook and have it automatically work every time.

edit: Never mind, it's in the description of Grappling Hook...
