Doubling Rings and Improvised Weapons

Rules Discussion

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

If my character has a +1 striking shortsword and doubling rings, then picks up a torch and wields it as an improvised weapon, is there any reason the doubling rings wouldn't impart the "+1 striking" to the torch?

I see no reason why not!

While I'm here . I've wondered before if the doubling rings interact with handwraps of mighty blows (I fear not but it would certainly open up interesting options)

I guess not because handwraps are worn items, not weapons and doubling rings only work with weapons. Doubling rings will work with a gauntlet though.

Hmmm... I see where this comes from but gauntlets considered the line becomes really thin

I would even consider a monk who has gauntlets and doubling ring to get the enchantments on whatever monastic weaponry he's currently wearing

that way one would have to enchant only one weapon instead of how many one wants to carry around

Doubling rings work perfectly fine on gauntlets. But you have to be wielding the enchanted weapon to double the effect over onto another. So you can have an enchanted gauntlet, and use a weapon in the other hand. Works fine.

But if you enchant a gauntlet, then wield another weapon in that hand, that doesn't work. Because you only count as wielding something if you're holding it in a way that allows you to use it (p. 272, "Wielding"), and a gauntlet can't be used if that hand is full (p. 282, "Free-Hand").

Basically, unless you have more than two arms, you're not going to be able to use doubling rings with any two-handed weapons (like a bo staff).

But using doubling rings to have to only maintain one fully enchanted weapon, that's working as intended. The WBL system doesn't want for example 2WF builds to be paying double the money for fully upgraded weapons compared to 2H builds.

Doubling rings work with every off-hand and main weapon combo as explained by @Ascalaphus.

Some examples:

Off-hand weapon (Main-gauge) and main weapon (Rapier)
Off-hand weapon (Shield spike) and main weapon (Sword)
Off-hand weapon (Gauntlet) and main weapon (Kama)

I think RAI the idea is to fully enchant the main weapon and not have to fully enchant the off-hand weapon. However for some applications it is far more efficient to enchant the off-hand weapon to not have to enchant every single main weapon.

For example as a Champion you could enchant your off-hand shield boss or spike with a +2 striking rune and have the striking runes effects on any adamantine, cold iron, silver or else weapon that you wield in your main hand.
