Sneaking past an asleep creature without waking them

Rules Discussion

So I am trying to understand how this works. If the creature was awake but you were undetected/unnoticed, you would keep your condition by using the Sneak action (so Stealth check vs their Perception DC), provided that you have cover or you're concealed or invisible or whatever.

However, rules for waking up unconscious creatures say that if you're trying to be quiet around them they automatically make a Perception check against your Stealth DC at the start of their turn to wake up or not.

So, to sneak past them and avoid waking up them (and keep your unnoticed and undetected conditions), is this your Stealth check vs their Perception DC or their Perception check vs Stealth DC?

Actually, the specific rule in the unconscious condition seems to be there for you trying to keep quiet if you're making a loud noise. So I believe it's a Stealth check vs Perception DC. In which case, if they notice you and consequently wake up, do you become hidden (Well, unless you're in the middle of nowhere and so you become observed since they gain their vision back)?

I think there are two general rules that kinda clash here:

  • The party taking the action rolls, and
  • PCs should generally get a roll to avoid/mitigate really bad stuff.

When trying to sneak, the sneak-er should generally roll.
In a case where the entire party is about to be ambushed in their sleep (and possibly slaughtered), they should probably get a perception check to wake up.

If PCs are just trying to sneak past a group, I'd just go with Stealth roll vs Perception DC.
