I find myself in need of one of these delightful little monsters... has anyone done a 2e conversion of them yet?
If not, does anyone have advice on how to handle the "immunity to metal" ability in the context of 2e?

Yeah, that's why I was stumbling on exactly what to do... I think I'm going to let it keep the "walk through metal" part of the ability, and then for offense and defense we'll do resistance to metal weapons and treats targets wearing metal armor as flat footed.
I'll post the stat block here when I'm done with it.

Here we go.
N MEDIUM ELEMENTAL FIRE EARTH
Perception +12; Darkvision, Tremorsense (imprecise) 30 feet
Languages Ignan, Lava Child
Skills Deception +7, Intimidation +10, Nature +9, Cave Lore +7, Elemental Planes Lore +7
Str +4, Dex +3, Con +4, Int +1, Wis +3, Cha +1
Metal Phasing Lava children exist out of phase with most metals and pass through them as if they didn't exist. They apply their resistance to metal weapons against any attack or spell that primarily uses a metallic object to deal damage and they can move through metal objects without needing to earth glide. Creatures wearing metal armor are considered flat footed against a lava child's bite and claw attacks. A lava child cannot supress this ability; for example, a lava child that tried to step onto a metal floor would sink (or even fall, if the metal is deep enough) immediately.
AC 18; Fort +12, Ref +6, Will +6; +2 status to all saves vs effects with the Earth trait
HP 42; Immunities bleed, fire, paralyzed, poison, sleep; Resistances metal weapons 5; Weaknesses cold 5
Speed 25 feet, burrow 10 feet; earth glide
Melee [A] bite +10, Damage 1d8+4 piercing plus 1d6 fire
Melee [A] claw +10 (agile), Damage 1d6+4 slashing
Ranged [A] magma throw +12, Damage 4d6 fire plus 1d6 persistent fire
Rend [A] claw
Cough Magma [A] The lava child vomits up a ball of magma to use for its magma throw attack. This magma remains red-hot as long the lava child holds it, but cools to ambient temperature one round after being thrown. A lava child standing in or adjacent to a pool of magma can instead scoop some up as a free action.
Some notes: The accuracy on the melee attacks is only moderate instead of high because many characters will be wearing metal armor, meaning it will be hitting with "high" accuracy most of the time. HP is low because the resistance to metal weapons is likely to apply to the majority of attacks against the creature.
The damage on magma throw is fairly high, but that's because it usually takes the lava child two actions to use it.
I'll probably end up doing a lava child chieftain stat block as well, I just need to decide if it should be level 4 or level 5.

And here's the chieftain.

HP 72; Immunities bleed, fire, paralyzed, poison, sleep; Resistances metal weapons 7; Weaknesses cold 7
Speed 25 feet, burrow 10 feet; earth glide
Melee [A] bite +13, Damage 2d8+4 piercing plus 1d6 fire
Melee [A] claw +13 (agile), Damage 2d6+4 slashing
Melee [A] slam +15 (lava form only), Damage 2d8+4 bludgeoning plus 1d6 persistent fire
Ranged [A] magma throw +15, Damage 5d6 fire plus 2d6 persistent fire
Primal Innate Spells DC 19; 4th shape stone; 3rd pyrotechnics, summon elemental (creatures with the earth or fire trait only);
Cough Magma [A] The lava child vomits up a ball of magma to use for its magma throw attack. This magma remains red-hot as long the lava child holds it, but cools to ambient temperature one round after being thrown. A lava child standing in or adjacent to a pool of magma can instead scoop some up as a free action.
Font of Lava [AAA] (earth, fire, primal) Summoning up the primal elemental energies of earth and fire, the chieftan produces an explosion of volcanic energy, dealing 3d8 fire and bludgeoning damage to all creatures in a 30 foot burst (basic Reflex save DC 19). Creatures with the earth or fire traits (including the lava child chieftan) are instead healed for an equal amount. The lava child chieftain can't use this ability again for 1d4 rounds.
Lava Form [A] (earth, fire, polymorph) The lava child chieftain transforms its body itnto one of pure magma. While in this form, it loses the ability to make melee attacks except for slam attacks and gains the ability to swim in magma at a speed of 30 feet. It loses its metal phasing ability and resistance to metal weapons, but gains resistance 5 to physical damage. Its weakness to cold increases to 10 and it gains weakness 10 to spells and attacks with the Water trait; being immersed in water deals 4d6 damage per round to a lava child chieftain in lava form. Any creatures that takes an action that involves touching the chieftain - including Grapples and unarmed Strikes - taked 1d6 fire damage. A lava child chieftain cannot cast spells or use its Font of Lava ability while in lava form, but can make magma throw attacks without needing to cough or scoop up magma. The lava child chieftain can Dismiss this transformation as an action.
Notes: I tweaked a few things from the original version but tried to keep the spirit of the creature as much as possible. The chieftain loses Rend because it's less of a melee combatant and more of a support role; Font of Lava should make these guys great at leading groups of lava children.
Lava Form, meanwhile, makes the chieftain a more credible melee threat by itself, but at the cost of losing most of its special abilities.
