Tyrant's Grasp

Hey all!

My group recently stopped playing Skull and Shackles and we are moving to Tyrant's Grasp. Everyone is pretty excited to play. Given that pirates were abundant in mainstream media, I had no shortage of ideas and inspiration for playing and running the game. Not as much for this one.

Are there any tv shows, anime, or movies that people can recommend to help get me in a better head space for running this horror survival AP? I'd like to emphasize some of the horror aspects, given there are many creatures in these books that you rarely find in other standard games. Any recommendations that might help in generating fun side plots or encounters would be excellent!

Hey all!

Here's my suggestions.

- Book 1 it's quite disconnected from the main adventure, and does not ad up easily.
I would have the adventure start as book 2, with level 4 or more players, and have book 1 contents "cut up" and "spliced" as dream sequences between book 2 or 3.
This would allow your players to proper focus on the desolation caused by the RF. In this way, the Pc have two mysteries: 1) why are we alive? 2) why there are 2 versions of ...

- Book2, 3 and 4 have got a "berserk vibe" to me. You should watch that anime.

- The masked lady we could easily be roleplayed as Daenerys Targaryen, both as the character and the story impact

- TB should be more present in the whole story, and hammed as much as possible. There are many liches in the current media, so i would suggest to pick the one from Adventure time as a model.

- Book 5 is greatly different from the whole story. This is done to allow players to breath, but also "cuts them away" from the main events of the history. I would suggest to greatly reduce it's contents and allow the Pc to stay in the country of Vigil more time.

- I've proposed in the forums a complete rewrite of book 6, to proper bound the story together and allow more character interaction at the end. I'd advise you to read through it, because there are a few other problems i've found in the campaign which are summarized there.

Thanks! I've read some of the feedback and reviews about book 6, and definitely intend to change it. I'm planning to do a prologue where the party is sent out to clear a nearby ruined temple of Aroden of some problematic creatures. While they are there, they come across the Grace of the Last Azlanti hidden beneath it from Book 3. This will give more of an explanation as to why they were affected.

I don't dislike the idea of upping the mystery level, but I don't feel confident that I could smoothly do a retroactive flashback that covers an entire book.

Sovereign Court

Even though these are both kids movies, Coco and the Book of Life have a lot of great visuals for the afterlife and both are inspired by hispanic/ mesoamerican culture which shows up again and again in the first and 5th books.

Sovereign Court

Ok thought about this a lot more as I've been making homework assignments before sessions to get players in the right mindset.

So for the Dead Roads:
The Crow
As Above So Below (for Roslar's Tomb)
Nightmare on Elm Street, The Cell, Dreamscape for Salighara's Scriptorium
Hellboy the Golden Army (auction house scene) for The Palace of Teeth
Beetlejuice, especially the afterlife bureaucracy scenes for how Psychopomp hierarchy works.

Eulogy for Roslar's Coffer:
Silent Hill
13 Ghosts

I'll likely have more as I go on. I also have a Spotify Playlist

Acquisitives

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Lost Omens, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

The Leftovers - really captures the sense of loss and disorientation which the PCs should feel, especially once they realize what's happened, and what's going to happen as they progress through the campaign

I also made my PCs listen to Modest Mouse's 'Ocean Breathes Salty' to help visualize my version of Mictena in Book 1

As you get to part 2 of Last Watch I highly recommend the Chronicles of Riddick. The necromongers draw a good comparison to the Seal Breakers.
