Starting 2E at higher levels

Pathfinder Second Edition General Discussion

Has anyone tried moving from 1E to 2E at higher levels (say above 7) and playing games from that.

Are there any significant pit falls over starting at level 1? I would imagine spell casters having many more spells to check on (which is sort of true in any edition)

Does the game lend itself to a *relatively* straight forward transition? And is there a point that anyone can potentially think of that would be too high a level to move over because of reasons I am clearly not aware of.

(All this is based on the assumption the GM is fine converting things over including monsters)

It's mostly straightforward, except for the usual issues of players having to learn all the abilities they would normally learn incrementally, spells etc.

There are no massive "now this game plays totally differently" power jumps like there are in PF1 from low to mid and then to high levels, so it's a much more consistent experience. You get new toys to play with, but there's no point where casters start blowing reality apart.

My group was fairly experienced at PF1 and high level play, but I still had them start at low level. I think the advantage to this is the fewer options. Not because they wouldn’t be able to handle and remember all the options they would have, but because I wanted them to get a batter grasp on the basics of PF2. Spending more energy on the basic actions that everyone has, strike, stride, step and such, has made them more at home with the system and the opportunities the three action system gives than if they’d never had to use a basic move because they had so many class activities to use.

The time the rogue ran up to a line of crossbowmen, and then watched them run away, reload and shoot him alone was worth it. Both the learning and the look on his face as someone just left combat because it was a terrible place to be.

That said I also have been leveling them much faster than the numbers alone say I should. As they’ve mastered the basics I want them to have more option and so I’ve been moving back towards mid levels where I slowed it back down to a more normal pace.

Playing War for the Crown. We transitioned around lvl 9 I think?
My Investigator that had a background of being a child duelist champion was converted to a duelist Fighter with Alchemist dedication. It was pretty straightforward, and worked well for a time. I was sub-optimised as a fighter, but it was mainly my own doing, as I made lot of choices more based on "flavor". I later changed to the playtest Investigator and things works out a bit better.

The real "itches" I have seen are on the other players' characters. Mainly the spell casters. Two needed to have a full rebuild because they didn't quite like the feel of their converted characters.

Note: "Conversion" is not really a good word here TBH... You basically need to "redo" your character from 0, and you did something weird with your build in PF1 that is important to the flavor, some times it's better to actually change the base class completely.

So, as a GM, I would make sure my players know they would have at least a one or two "free" rebuild in case they don't like the conversion they did.

Our GM started us in the limited run (quarantine defined) PF campaign at 5th level, and didn't see any real problems, even though two of us had never played PF2 (or even PF1, far as that goes) before.

I've done the transition from 1e to playtest to 2e across two different campaigns. It works out fine. The hardest bit is loot conversion, though that's the case even if you're starting at low levels.

What I did was match the items the party had obtained in PF1 with existing PF2 items and then made sure it hit the WBL benchmarks PF2 has.
