Dumb question, but if I know a spell like, say, mystic cure or junksword, which has increasingly more powerful versions at higher levels, do I automatically get those since I have the original or do I have to spend a Spell Known on each individual tier of the spell? Can I skip learning one tier, like taking 1st level junksword and ignoring 2nd level, but then learning 3rd level, or is 2nd level a requirement for 3rd?

You spend a spell known at the highest level you want to be able to cast. You can then choose to cast down but not up from that single spell known. If you know Mystic Cure 1 and learn Mystic Cure 3, you retrain Mystic Cure 1 to a new spell known and can cast 1-3.

Ohhhhhh! NOW I get it! Thanks, Xenocrat! :)

In case your curious why this is so? Its because, if the system were Cast Up rather than Cast Down, low level scalable spells would basically be "free" high level spell picks.

Whenever you level up you can move your spells around a bit and replace a spell. In other words if you learn a new higher version of a spell and use the spells known slot you can also unlearn a lower level spell and replace it with another. This way your not left with multiples of the same spell if you don't want.

Please note you can only "Swap" out one spell when you gain a level so choose wisely.
