Cavalier / Samurai Challenge Question

Rules Questions

Liberty's Edge

Quote:

Challenge (Ex): Once per day, a cavalier can challenge a foe to combat. As a swift action, the cavalier chooses one target within sight to challenge. The cavalier’s melee attacks deal extra damage whenever the attacks are made against the target of his challenge. This extra damage is equal to the cavalier’s level. The cavalier can use this ability once per day at 1st level, plus one additional time per day for every three levels beyond 1st, to a maximum of seven times per day at 19th level.

Challenging a foe requires much of the cavalier’s concentration. The cavalier takes a –2 penalty to his Armor Class, except against attacks made by the target of his challenge.

The challenge remains in effect until the target is dead or unconscious or until the combat ends. Each cavalier’s challenge also includes another effect which is listed in the section describing the cavalier’s order.

What happens when the target of a challenge teleports away? Also what happens if the challenger has ability to tell direction and distance the target went to?

Are you still in initiative?

If the answer is yes, then it's still on them.

As soon as the answer to that question is no, then the challenge goes away because you are no longer in combat.

Liberty's Edge

Hmmm... that's a cheap way to get rid of a once per day ability.

Isn't there a famous quote that when ending a fight that a still standing enemy has a say?

Alright so if it teleported away. And out of initiative order, does that count as ending combat? Does a character defeat the encounter? Do they receive xp?

It counts as ending the fight if the DM states that it does. Depending on the level of the characters, teleporting may not be enough to get away.

For example, the spell Trace Teleport potentially allows the group to chase the enemy within a round or two after they try to teleport away.

As for gaining XP, again that's up to the DM. Forcing the enemy to run away should count for something IMO. If the party never encounters that enemy again then they should probably get full xp. If the party expects to encounter them again then the party should probably get half xp. It really depends on the DM and what sort of behavior they wish to encourage.

If enemies teleporting away and then attacking the group an hour later (you know to make sure everyone's buffs have expired) becomes a reoccurring theme. Then the group should invest in some phase locking weapons so that it stops being an issue and you can finally start killing the bastards.

What it really comes down to is does the challenging character have a way to pursue the target or to continue the combat. The method of movement does not really matter, what matter is can the challenger still fight. In most cases someone teleporting far enough away that the challenger cannot find them will end the combat. So would someone flying away or even running away. But if the challenger can still attack or is pursuing them the combat has not ended. For example a samurai with a bow can still attack a flying target so in that instance the combat is not over. But since the challenge bonus only applies to melee they would not get it with the bow. If the challenger can latter attack the target in melee before the target gets away the challenge is still in effect so would get it.

The question of gaining XP is a little more difficult. Generally you gain XP of dealing with the situation not strictly from killing creatures. Each encounter should have a problem that your character needs to overcome. If you overcome the problem you should get XP for the encounter. For example if the encounter resolves around a monster attacking a group of innocents, you job is to protect the innocents. No matter how you manage to do that you should get XP. On the other hand if the encounter is about preventing someone from doing something and you don’t prevent the person from doing it you should not get XP. So if the samurai was trying to protect someone and the attacking person teleports away the samurai should get XP. If the samurai was trying to prevent a person from following a specific person and the target teleports around the samurai the have not achieved their objective and therefore should not get the XP.
