I have a character who just found a low grade intelligent weapon which would be perfect for them...except for the fact that it has the polar opposite alignment to the character. (Character is a CG Inquisitor of Shelyn, weapon is LE and favors Asmodeus)
I don't want to have to run around with a negative level from fighting for control over the weapon, but the stats of it are great for my level...I was wondering if there was any way I could convert it to my alignment? Or am I better off just selling it and putting the money towards a lesser magic item?
The weapon only has an ego score of 5 if that matters.

by RAW I don't think you can do this without using a miracle or wish. While strictly speaking intelligent items are creatures (constructs specifically) and therefore can be targeted with an Atonement spell. Atonement doesn't work on a creature that can't naturally alter it's own alignment.
Redemption or Temptation: You may cast this spell upon a creature of an opposing alignment in order to offer it a chance to change its alignment to match yours. The prospective subject must be present for the entire casting process. Upon completion of the spell, the subject freely chooses whether it retains its original alignment or acquiesces to your offer and changes to your alignment. No duress, compulsion, or magical influence can force the subject to take advantage of the opportunity offered if it is unwilling to abandon its old alignment. This use of the spell does not work on outsiders or any creature incapable of changing its alignment naturally.
Intelligent items can have abilities directly tied to their personality meaning their alignment is a non-trivial aspect of their being.
It's an interesting idea though and it makes sense to me that the item could be "turned". Though I imagine at minimum it would require the following.
1. A diplomacy check or series of checks to alter its attitude from hostile to helpful. or at least a diplomacy check to have it "give aid that could result in punishment". In order to convince the item that it should change alignment.
2. Give the item the broken condition and rebuild it via mending.
3. Cast atonement on it (material cost of 2,500 gp) during the mending process.
Its up to you if the cost would be worth it or not.

Thanks for the insight, I'll talk it over with my GM and see what he thinks. It has a fragment of the soul of a long dead npc, and can cast 2 spells.
The item is Anvengen's Edge if anyone has insight on how I might convert it.
