Sling Staff and Extinction Curse Acrobat Archetype Question

Rules Discussion

Typically the "Trip" tag allows a weapon to use its range increment for tripping. The Staff Acrobat Archetype from Extinction Curse says in part that you may trip and shove without a free hand while wielding certain weapons, including the Halfling Sling Staff.

I have a player who argues this means that trip and shove can be done at range. They point to the wording in Staff Sweep in particular which says you "use your staff to sweep people away." And the general requirement on many of the archetype feats that the character must be wielding one of the specified weapons.

However, nowhere do the feats say the weapon gains the trip or shove tags nor does it ever talk about the ability to use these maneuvers at range. I think RAI, Paizo had no plans of allowing people to trip and shove at range with a sling staff. Moreover, RAW, nothing seems to grant the ability.

Am I missing something?

Even if the weapon gained the Trip and Shove traits, those traits allow you to use maneuvers with a weapon's REACH, not a weapon's RANGE INCREMENT.

The fact that it triggers off Reach doesn't actually solve the issue as I see it though since the HSS is a Ranged ONLY Weapon, that is, unless your GM is letting characters use it as an Improvised Weapon or even a normal Staff Weapon.

Feels like an oversight where more permissive wording should have been added or perhaps a faulty assumption by the Archetype that the HSS already works like a normal Staff.

All of the weapons in the Dedication are 2 handed weapons. Normally, you could not use Athletics to Shove or Trip while wielding them. The dedication lets you Shove or Trip without having to remove 1 hand from your grip, and then waste an interact to put your hand back on your grip.

It doesn't grant you reach, or give the Shove or Trip traits to the weapons.

You need look no further than the new book, gods and magic. It has the trait that's required to trip with ranged attacks.

"Ranged Trip: The weapon can be used to Trip with the Athletics skill at a distance up to the weapon’s first range increment."
