Say your ranger attacks their hunted prey with and drops it with their precision damage on their first action, they hunt prey to select new prey with their second action, then attack the new prey with their third action would they add the precision damage to the attack? Is the prey designation the important part of the target or is it the creature?

Personally, it sounds like this it intended to only allow for the damage once a round. The wording could be more clear, but I read "the first time you hit your hunted prey in a round," to mean the first time you manage to hit any of your hunted prey(s). As opposed to "the first time the hunted prey(s) is hit by you in a round" which would be more in line with allowing it multiple times per round against different targets.

It's not as clear as it could be, but I could also see abuse with the other, allow a ranger to swap back and forth between two targets with hunted prey just for the extra damage.

I think it would apply to both attacks.

You have trained to aim for your prey’s weak points. The first time you hit your hunted prey in a round, you also deal 1d8 additional precision damage

I'd read that as the first time you hit each hunted prey in a round since you can later get feats to hunt multiple targets.

Throw me in the "each hunted prey is separate" camp here. If for instance you have Double Prey, I would allow both of your "first" attacks against each hunted target gain the precision damage.

@Jared Walter 356, I don't see much abuse here. If you wanted to "sweep back and forth between two targets," that is going to cost some serious actions. At that point that Ranger player may want to consider just being a Rogue.

After further consideration, I think I agree with Vlorax, and Beowulf.

Doing it that way your spreading your damage out instead of focusing a target, I like that as an option. Might make precision damage more useful.

Looks legitimate per the rule, although it's another way to make the crossbow ranger feel even sadder.

Definitely situational and probably not the best tactic unless your allies are all tanks and field control, otherwise probably better to scoot and shoot or mix in an animal companion or some skill usage. And if the RAI is to only allow precision on the first attack to hit any hunted prey in a round, an exception to allow a second attack precision only if the previous prey is slain might be a fair compromise until you acquire double prey.
