Shielded Stride + Shield Spell? Half or Full Movement?

Shielded Stride

Spoiler:

(Fighter 4)
When your shield is up, your enemies’ blows can’t touch you. When you have your shield raised, you can Stride to move half your Speed without triggering reactions that are triggered by your movement (such as Attacks of Opportunity). You can use Shielded Stride while Flying or Swimming instead of Striding if you have the corresponding movement type.

Q1: Can a clever character use this feat with the Shield spell?
Q2: When you Stride using this ability, do you move at half speed? Or, is only half of your Stride's full movement protected from triggering reactions?

Cheers.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

For your first question: I would allow it based on the fact that the text of shield spell and the other feats that shield spell interacts with.

For the second I would treat it as moving at half speed. Given the narrative text description, it would seem strange for it to deactivate mid stride or for a player to declare which feet in his single movement action are shielded strides and which are normal strides.

Q1: Since the shield spell counts as Raising a Shield, I would say yes.

Q2: Since it says "you can stride to move half your speed", I'd say it's optional. I either stride full speed but trigger reactions or I stride half speed and am protected. But it should be declared before each Stride action which mode I choose (So no just stopping at half speed after evading a AoO).

I agree. If it wasn't clear before the user should have the option to do either as long as it is declared before hand. I just wouldn't agree with an interpretation that allowed you to Shielded Stride for half your movement and then have your remaining movement to regular stride with. Essentially no double-dipping. You're either prioritizing protection or you're prioritizing speed.

Q1: Fighter Multiclass just went up in stock for Arcane, Divine, and Occult casters!

Q2: I agree, and wanted to know for Society play, as one of my players asked the question, who, playing a Dwarf, was deciding if this feat was worth it as an alternative to Step.

Not an English Major of any stripe, and my gut agrees with you, but I can also see the case the Dwarf player is making reading the sentence the way he does.

I can suggest the following language to make the intent crystal clear:

Shielded Stride
When your shield is up, your enemies’ blows can’t touch you. When you have your shield raised, you can Stride, but instead of moving your full speed, move half your Speed without triggering reactions that are triggered by your movement (such as Attacks of Opportunity). You can use Shielded Stride while Flying or Swimming instead of Striding if you have the corresponding movement type.

Cheers!

I like the language you used there. It does make it crystal clear during the first reading.

Just wanted to mention here because it wasn't mentioned before, (Not truly rule interpretation related so feel free to stop reading here)

This feat does require your shield to be raised which takes one action if you have one equipped or an action to raise the shield cantrip. So while this does give you more movement than step without provoking reactions you are using up 2 actions to do so instead of 1. This makes this combo more of a nice option to have in your back pocket for special situations (Monsters with reactions and a long reach) but for many scenarios step is still going to be the right choice.

Just some food for thought for your Dwarf friend!
