Elven Chain

Rules Discussion

Okay I am not sure if it's just me but I stumbled across the Elven Chain entry between the Precious Material Armor

So it says that it is specifically a chain shirt

5gp | 2 Ac | +3 Dex | -1 Check Penalty | no speed penalty | Str 12 | Bulk 1 | Flexible, Noisy (Crafting Costs Negligible)

made out of mithril

1760 gp | 2Ac | +3 Dex | -1 Check Penalty | no speed penalty | Str 10 | Bulk L | Flexible, Noisy (crafting costs 220 gp, which is really really cheap compared to buying it)

but modified to this:

2500gp | 2 Ac | +3 Dex | 0 Check Penalty | no speed penalty | Str 10 | Bulk 1 | Flexible (Crafting Costs: at least 3125gp)

Is that correct? Does that really look as strange as it is? Or did I misinterpret something about the entry

here the entry again

Spoiler:
ELVEN CHAIN ITEM 13+
UNCOMMON
Usage worn armor; Bulk 1
Elven chain is a chain shirt made of mithral (page 579) that
glitters in even the faintest light. It grants a +2 item bonus
to AC and has no check penalty.
Created by elven artisans employing ancient crafting
techniques, elven chain is exceptionally quiet. Unlike other
chain shirts—even other mithral chain shirts—elven chain
does not have the noisy  trait. This suit of armor can be
etched with runes like any other mithral chain shirt.

What about this looks odd? I will note that the cost of the crafting components for the "standard grade" components is actually given in "SP" and not "GP", so would actually be 312.5 GP, and not 3125.

Other than that it looks about right to me. What specifically feels wrong?

Edit: Also, nice Avatar. :)

well, the mithril bonus gives in itself almost nothing about the usual mithril shirt (which I admit, can be just an unlucky coincidence)

so the only ones profiting from mithril chains are characters with 10 strength

and then 700 extra for silent and the bulk increased back to 1 seems a lot
the check penalty is reduced to 0 but it was already 0 for everyone who has no str penalty

so it seems...really lackluster for the extra money (although the bulk is probably just a typo)

Good catch, the bulk should be "L" on elven chain, just applying Mithril to a Chainshirt. Other than that, it does feel slightly lack luster. Getting rid of noisy is nice though since there is no "hard" penalty for it, instead just stating that you make noise when sneaking and the like.

Takes away that tool from a GM for gotcha-ing a party.

The Exchange

My understanding of crafting is slightly different

The default requirements for crafting are 1/2 the cost of the item in raw material (you can then reduce the other half of the costs with crafting). p244

The mithral and elven chain shirts have additional special requirements that a portion of the raw materials must be mithral (p534 Crafting Requirements are special requirements). Thus:

Chain shirt raw material crafting cost is 2.5 gp
Mithral shirt raw material is 880 gp (of which at least 220 is raw mithral)
Elven chain raw material is 1,250 GP (of which at least 312.5 is raw mithral)

They have codified Noisy in errata:

Page 275: Under the Armor Traits heading, change the
entry for Noisy to “Noisy: This armor is loud and likely to
alert others to your presence. The armor’s check penalty
applies to Stealth checks even if you meet the required
Strength score.”

I really need to remember to check errata, then again I haven't had an occasion to check for noisy yet, so can't be that mad at myself. I will say that this devalues Elven Chain considerably. Since it already has no check penalty, there is really no point to getting rid of Noisy.

Yeah, I am actually really disappointed by elven chain

I mean, the Mithril Chain Shirt was THE armor for most pf1 dex characters

I mean, if elven chain could be applied to other types of armor (i.e. chain mail instead of just the chain shirt) that would make it at least viable (at least I think so, not entirely sure tbh)

and/or increase the max dex (I know its not a thing in pf2) by one (which would lead to legendary craftsmanshit beeing on par with just wearing a slab of metal (i know this is an exceggeration)
