Specialized Wizard Cantrips

Rules Discussion

Hey all,

I just stumbled across the line in the wizard spellcasting section that mentions that specialized wizards get an extra cantrip, as well as an extra spell slot per spell level (A little embarrassing because I've been playing said wizard for a few sessions now and only just discovered this fact) and I was wondering if anyone had heard if this was a possible error in the rules or was intended?

I'm not debating whether or not wizards can do this, because it's spelled out clear as day in the spellcasting section of their class writeup, I'm just curious because that makes specialized wizards the only class to start with six cantrips instead of what seems to be the standard five. Even sorcs only get the usual five, including their bloodline cantrip.

Thanks for helping itch my curiosity.

1. Sorcerers aren't about having greater volume any more, so they have the normal amount as well as get higher level spells on odd numbers like other full-casters. It's more about the bloodlines & spontaneity now.

2. Having a bonus spell is the Wizard specialist's shtick, likely to balance not being able to shift slots between spells (like spontaneous casters) and having to maintain a spell book (unlike the other prepared casters who have instant access to all common spells).
Like the other bonus slots, the bonus Cantrip has to be in the specialist's school (which yes, is a minor hindrance).

Whether that bonus spell imbalances the Wizard is arguable, though I think not. And it's not that extra Cantrip that's an issue. Several feats can give you those.

I didn't think it was particularly unbalancing, I was wondering primarily because we've already seen one correction to the wizard with that accidental first-level feat and the extra cantrip stood out as an oddity to me.

I'll happily take an extra cantrip, myself. I rather like that it gives the wizard greater cantrip volume, myself. Having more simple fixes for small problems feels like a rather wizard-y thing to do.
