can a medium character wield a large two-handed weapon? one of my players says yes with a
-2 penalty. I say no due to it being "altered by one step for each size category of difference
between the wielder's size and the size of the creature for which the weapon was designed"
because, if a weapon's designation would be changed to something other than light one-handed,
or two-handed. by this alteration, the creature can't wield the weapon at all. {core p.144}.
Who is correct?

This is the Second Edition Forum and I'm pretty sure this is a 1st Ed Question.
That said, if you're asking for 2E, the answer is an unequivocal "No" flat out, unless they're playing a Giant Instinct Barb and all the rules for it are described in the Instinct ability itself.
If you're asking for 1E, the answer is still "No" unless they have some ability (Like the Barbarian abilities) that let them do it explicitly. The PC in now way would even be able to use a Large 2H Weapon to attack in any way shape or form as anything other than an Improvised Weapon which ALSO would take another penalty for being inappropriately sized too.

well your wrong for 2e. "In most cases, Small or Medium creatures can wield a Large weapon, though it’s unwieldy, giving them the clumsy 1 condition, and the larger size is canceled by the difficulty of swinging the weapon, so it grants no special benefit. Large armor is simply too large for Small and Medium creatures." pg. 295 core which is why I don't understand titan mauler in 2e.

It's my understanding that the benefit for Giant Instinct Barbarians is that their rage provides greater damage (i.e. +6 vs. +2) while using the over-sized weapon
My question is does the weapon not gain a damage increase for being a large-sized variety of the base? From the rules in the equipment section of the CRB ("Increasing Die Size", pg. 279) it appears that there is a maximum damage type for any weapon, that being a d12.
I thought I had found an inconsistency because there are some giants in the MM1 (2nd Ed Bestiary - but MM1 resonates with my brain better - stick with me here - lol) whose large-sized weapon used 2d12 as opposed to the 1d12 but then I had to remember these pesky new-fangled "striking" runes do just that - they double the damage dice.
Does anyone have any information where the size increases to weapon damage actually goes above the d12?
Thanks,
Nifty

That rule for increasing Die Size is talking about effects that increase the damage die of your weapon as in the case of the Cleric's Deadly Simplicity Class Feat. Not the "size" of that weapon. In PF1, I do believe you increased the Die size of a weapon corresponding to it's size. This is no longer the case in PF2. The only thing that changes afaik with weapon size is cost and bulk unless you have an ability that says otherwise.

It doesn't ever go above 1d12 and increasing weapon size does not increase weapon damage.
Monsters in the Bestiary have the stats and do the damage they need to do to be a threat at their level, they aren't built using PC rules.
