The Text "bless the check by the deity" appears on some of the new Core characters. I was curious if it was just flavor text or if the deity had an affect? Normally Paizo tries to shorten as much as possible so I thought I would ask here about the two places I have seen it.
"You may avenge by discarding a blessing; during the encounter, your checks are blessed by the deity Sarenrae."
On your non-combat check at an Urban location, add 1d4. (□ You may additionally recharge a card to bless the check by the deity Shelyn.)

I suppose the "by Deity X" means that the check gets the X trait.
Yup. That's in the Core rulebook on page 12, "Rules: Bless" section:
If a power blesses by a deity, or if a card used to bless has the Deity trait, add the deity’s name as a trait to the check. For example, if a check is “blessed by Sarenrae” or is blessed by a card that has the trait “Deity: Sarenrae,” add the Sarenrae trait to the check.

While we didn't explore that particular game space that much yet, it's fairly likely that at some point we'll want to make having or not having a deity on your check makes a real difference.
I love this. It adds so much flavor. I can see somebody like Kyra having a power like "When your check is blessed by the deity Sarenrae, add an extra die."
Or Ezren: "When your check is blessed by a deity, subtract 1 from the result"
