Arcane Evolution

Rules Discussion

How exactly does the Spellbook granted by Arcane Evolution interact with the sorcerer's spell repertoire?

1. If I learn a spell heightened, does the book contain the base version or the heightened version?
2. Do I need a heightened version of a spell in the spellbook if I want to add that level version to my repertoire?
3. What happens when I retrain a spell during level up or downtime? I assume the old spell stays in the book and the new spell is added on top. That could be exploited to get access to more spells.

Same questions also apply to bards with the Esoteric Polymath feat, of course.

As it is often said, the simplest solution is often the right one.

Going to assume the sorcerer is level 4. If that is the case written in Signature Spell you have (a class feature of all sorcerers at 3rd level):

" You don’t need to learn
heightened versions of signature spells separately; instead,
you can heighten these spells freely. If you’ve learned a
signature spell at a higher level than its minimum, you
can also cast all its lower-level versions without learning
those separately."

In Arcane Evolution:

"During your daily preparations, choose any one spell from your book of arcane spells.
If it isn’t in your spell repertoire, add it to your spell repertoire until the next time you
prepare. If it’s already in your spell repertoire, add it as an additional signature spell
for that day"

So even if you did add the heightened spell twice, you can add it at two different spell levels with the signature spell class feature description.

Access to more spells, not really, since you probably already either paid for the spell or earned the spell from adventuring (in the case of an uncommon spell for example).

@Eltacolibre: Sorry, but I don't see how your post answers any of my questions.

But I can't add a spell to my daily repertoire and make it a Signature spell at the same time. My question is basically: I'm a 5th level sorcerer. My spellbook contains 1st level Magic Missile. It's not in my learned Spell Repertoire. I use Arcane Evolution to add it for a day. Can I add the 3rd level version to my repertoire for that day?

Not really. Say I'm a 4th level sorc with Arcane Evolution. I become level 5. I learn Fireball and Slow as my spells (in addition to the 3rd level spell from my bloodline) and presumably add them to my Spellbook for free. Now I have some Downtime and decide to switch out Fireball for Lightning Bolt. What happens to the book? Does it "magically" lose the Fireball entry ad add Lightning Bolt? Do I not add Lightning Bolt to the book for some reason? Does the book contain both spells?

Sovereign Court

1) Yes.

2) Seeing that Wizard can retrain their entire arcane school and there is nowhere that mentions Wizard lose the spells that they learned during levels up, your book would contain both spells.

1. I think all written spells are the base version, and can always be prepared, whether by a wizard, arcane evolution sorcerer, or esoteric polymath bard, at any level you choose.

2. No, written spells can be autoheightened at whatever level you want to prepare them at.

3. Agreed, you retain your "forgotten" spells in your spellbook. For Bards planning to take Eclectic Polymath this can be a great way to expand their spellbook since they'll have so much freedom to change their repertoire on a day to day basis.
