Questions about the Jadwiga

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I can't seem to figure what exactly the Jadwiga is. So far what I know is this

It is a certain type of human.

They are all descendants of Baba Yaga.

They are the rulers of Irrisen (duchess, dukes, baroness and so on)

I know their function in irrisen and why they are called Jadwiga.

But here are some questions I can't seem to figure out:

Are all female Jadwiga white witches?

Do they all have pale skin and white hair(from lost omens character guide 2e)

Do they live longer than normal humans? (All of irrisens queens get to be a hundred years old and queen Elvana doesn't exactly look old)

Hope someone can help me with this.

No. In Irrisen, you need to be female, Jadwiga, and a Winter Witch to hold the title of 'White Witch'... but not all people meeting those criteria are white witches.

Those are common, but not absolutes. Offhand, I can think of one blond white witch and one with blue skin.

The first few generations descended from Baba Yaga have certain otherworldly traits. After that they are just 'normal' humans.

To add onto this, the queens don’t age because of the Icecrown of Irrisen’s magic.

A SMMMARY of what's been officially written (and is "publically" known on golarion).

The categorization of the subject implies that Jadwiga is a human ethnicity (race), so the common coloration (pale skin and white hair) may have exceptions (not all Irish are redheads, but they are stereotypically), or may not (I have yet to meet a black person who doesn't have naturally black hair).

This makes me wonder: who are the extremely strong stomached men who keep choosing to mate with Baba Yaga to give her daughters (or do they not choose to, if you get my drift?)

She's an Nth level witch. I'm sure she knows Alter Self. And obviously Dominate Person too, but there's no need for excess effort. Though Neutral Evil, so she'll do what she feels like.

Oddly enough Disguise Self isn't on the witch list. of course Archmage 10 makes that a non-issue.

As Queen of Witches, Baba Yaga knows all witch spells, as well as all sorcerer/wizard spells. Baba Yaga also has knowledge of many other spells that she has researched. Many of these are arcane versions of divine spells. In addition, Baba Yaga can create artifacts, and has done so to great extent, the greatest of which is the Dancing Hut of Baba Yaga.

It’s on the sorcerer/wizard list, so she can cast it.

The witch spell Threefold Aspect lets her turn into a younger version of herself (maiden or mother) for 24 hours. She also has a 32 charisma. Between that and a +26 bluff skill she probably doesn't have any trouble finding lovers who don't recognize her as the universe's scariest grandma.

And the universe is a big place, she can surely find people who are into that too.

She can also outright regain her youth after consuming the life essence of those daughters she's deemed failures (which is pretty much all of them but Tashanna).

Nearly all of her daughters being blue-eyed blondes when she's a brunette indicates that Dear Grandmother has pretty specific tastes, though.

Or that grandma dyes her hair...

Wow. So many comments. Brain... exploding...

Anyway, the way in which the daughters of Baba Yaga happen is probably not the entirety of the Jadwiga. They started with her, but bred true on their own and now have their own ethnicity within the Human race of PF. As the wiki mentions there are exceptions in their social and gender roles, there must also be exceptions to them genetically as well. For instance the least of the Jadwiga may take Ulfen mates. The childer of these unions, if not destroyed/used in some evil magic would likely lead to genetic anomalies.

I don't think that's a safe assumption at all.

Elvanna has white hair. Tashanna has been depicted with black hair, but may have changed her appearance. A son and grand-daughter of Baba Yaga in Reign of Winter have brown hair.

Nazhena, one of her great-great-grandaughters, IS described as having blond hair and blue eyes... but also as being of mixed Jadwiga and Ulfen descent.

For my Reign of Winter campaign I set up a little extra encounter in the first module where the party ran into a young Baba Yaga in the First World while travelling though a fey gate instead of just arriving on the other side. The Ulfen paladin got on her bad side by protecting and not giving up a gnome she was chasing while the elf in the party ended up hooking up with her. This set off her invasion of the Land of the Linnorm Kings in the party's past and her first daughter Jadwiga was half-Elf. The first generation of Jadwiga descendants can all be half-elves. Going through the history of the adventure path and the Irrisen book I expanded out why the winter wolves work with her from her shapeshifting into a Dire wolf and seducing Fenris and bearing some strong pups so that there is a tie into the magic of Irrisen for the human changing winter wolves and in my game 2nd gen Jadwiga were natural werewolves and their descendants can be the shifters/lycans/whatever the pathfinder version was. Tashana being Iggwilv I made her a half-Demon so that gen of Jadwiga could be tieflings. I tied this into BY making a pact with Lamashtu which included shrines throughout the land and BY siring demonic blooded offspring.

This illustrated each generation being supernaturally powerful in different ways and allowed a variety of Jadwiga to be common throughout Irrisen. The paladin later played a half-elven Jadwiga from Irrisen in the AP.

This set up also left it open as well for changelings and other part human Jadwiga generations if desired, though it never came up.
