Alternate Flip-Mats & Maps

How often do you not use the custom map or specific flip-mat listed in a PFS scenario?

For example, many times I have used the my Deep Forest flip-mat in place of the Classic Forest flip-mat. I have considered using the Museum flip-mat in place of the custom Blakros Museum map.

Part of the reason I'm asking is from an efficiency perspective. A scenario I'm going to be running a few times has a flip-mat that I currently don't have. But, I have good varied collection of flip-mats already.

Thoughts?

I've been tempted, but I didn't think it was allowed to swap maps. (I could be wrong though . . .)

I swap maps all the time.

I fairly recently bought a set of 20 WOTC maps of all sorts (10 two sided sheets of paper) but even before that I'm a great believer in the "close enough" school of mapping.

It certainly used to be legal (I think it still is) to swap maps as long as the new map preserves the key features of the original map.

So, if the map ACTUALLY contributes greatly to combat you have to keep it but if its just a generic bar then you can swap with another generic bar.

And quickly drawing accurate maps is NOT one of my core competencies :-). So using the "wrong" map is often going to be better than my quickly drawing one

I swap, especially forest maps, to the bigger forest map. I always tell the players when I do, though, and make sure it's okay for them. Then I try to use whatever part represents the actual map most.

Unless the map is so different that encounters would have totally different tactics I personally think it's better to have a nice printed flip mat than a quickly sketched one, but informing the party you are doing so seems like a proper thing to do.

I myself have used (amongst others):
* The river side of the Deep Forest for the final combat in The Confirmation.
* The Theater flip mat for Among the Living.
* Winter Forest for the Remoraz encounter in To Scale the Dragon.

If/When you do this, be sure to check to see if anyone has the Boon "Haven't I Been Here Before?" on for the map you are replacing (and the one you are using to replace it with) on their PC.

"Haven't I Been Here Before?" gives bonuses to the PC for adventuring on a selected Flip Mat. I guess you'd need to make some type of ruling on if the bonuses apply when the boon selected map is replaced or used to replace...

I'd be inclined to give the PC the benefit of the doubt, and allow either one.

The biggest map substitution I ever did was to sub out the battle map for We Be Goblins on the Free RPG day before Starfinder came out.

In lieu of Vorka's pirate ship, we had Vorka's crashed Space Ship (and here's the sideview.)

I wanted to rev up excitement for Starfinder, and so used the map to give We Be Goblins a sci-fi element. I modeled the crashed ship off the shirren vessels that had already been previewed in the blog!

Hmm
