Adding class levels

Hello,

I am adding a few levels of wizard to a gauth from the 3.5 monster manual. What would you say that creatures role is? Spell or special?

Spell: Spell creatures possess a large number of spells that allow them to attack or harass their enemies. These creatures usually have lower hit points and relatively weak attacks as compared to the averages for creatures of their CR. Note that creatures that only possess spell-like abilities do not fall into this role, and are usually considered combat or special.

Sounds like "special" is a winner. A gauth's main abilities are its nasty magical eyes, and those aren't technically spells.

Hmm... toss the Simple Wizard Template on it? o wo Might be faster unless you really need to give it full class levels.
