Feral Gnasher Goblin - swallow whole?

Advice

Looking through character options for a Feral Gnasher barbarian, I came across the three Tyrant Totem rage powers. Notably, the 12th level greater power gives the barbarian the Swallow Whole ability.

Since goblins are small-sized, that rather limits the usefulness of Swallow Whole by default. My question is thus what ways there are of increasing the size of eligible targets for swallowing.

There are a couple of avenues, like the Abyssal blood rage power, for increasing the goblin's actual size, but any "counts as larger" abilities would add to the fun. Third party and 3.5e material suggestions are welcome.

There are medium-sized goblins too - the oversized goblin subrace from the Monster Codex, lower down the goblin page you linked. Starting from medium size will make abyssal blood (or a simple potion of enlarge person) take you to large.

If you're allowed Spheres of Might content, spending 3 feats on extra combat talent or trading some general feats for proficient progression & taking the brute sphere, muscular surge, then giant lets you be treated as one size larger for combat maneuvers - swallow whole is a combat maneuver.

Convince a friendly spellcaster to cast reduce person or, better, baleful polymorph on the enemy.

Thanks for pointing me toward Spheres of Might, avr. Even beyond the Giant talent in the Brute sphere, it looks like the Giantslayer and Titan Breaker feats do exactly what I'm looking for. :)

Oh wow, that really works! I was going to suggest Spheres of Power for the Alteration Sphere and the Size Change talent to be able to become large at level 10, but that also takes 3 feats. And then there's the whole spell points thing. Those feats are a lot better. Plus funnier. We're talking about a small goblin eating medium opponents.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Sketching out a feat and rage power plan, I came up with this for an oversized goblin feral gnasher:

1: Extra Talent (Brute Sphere) (Spheres of Might)
2: Throw Anything (bonus feat)
3: Improved Grapple
4: Rage Power - Tyrant Totem, Lesser
5: Giantslayer (Spheres of Might)
6: Rage Power - Animal Fury
7: Greater Grapple
8: Rage Power - Tyrant Totem
9: Rapid Grappler
10: Rage Power - Strength Surge
11: Titan Breaker (Spheres of Might)
12: Rage Power - Tyrant Totem, Greater
13: Sleeper Hold

Unfortunately, the build doesn't seem to have room for more talents in the Brute sphere to get the Muscular Surge, Giant and Titan talents until really late. I would have liked to include Sleeper Hold even earlier too, though I'm not sure if it interacts with Swallow Whole like I think it does...
Some claws would have been nice too.

The giant slayer/titan breaker feats don't look like they'd stack with the giant and titan talents anyway, I think the feats you found are better for this character.

Mind if I write this up and send it in to the Spheres of Power wiki character creation event?

Feel free. :)

I'd love to see the end result, especially your take on how the different abilities interact. Some of the feral gnasher's class abilities and the rage powers seem to either overlap or enable some sort of free action bite-grapple-release-bite loop...
