Cracked Vibrant Purple Prism Ioun Stone

I'm looking for some clarifications on the "Cracked" Vibrant Purple Prism Ioun Stone.

First and foremost, is the use of this Ioun Stone itself legal in PFS Organised Play?

Does the character using the Stone have to be an actual Spell-Caster themselves?

Can a Non-Spellcaster with Use Magic Device skill, themselves re-cast spells into the Stone, and what would the DC for doing this be?

And lastly, would personal spells - like "Shield",for example - be legal for PFS Organised Play if cast into this stone?

I have the "Seeker of Secrets" from which, of course, the Stone is sourced. But a link to a recent, up-to-date official ruling from the game developers / PFS staff etc on the exact legality and useage of the stone would be helpful to satisfy whatever GM might be at the table on a given day.

A couple of players in the past have also expressed doubts and reservations as well, if not to the legality of the item in PFS, then certainly to the use of it for casting personal spells - Shield being a classic example.

Many thanks and cheers.

No

Yes, you can use scrolls (or other spell completion items), but not wands (or other spell trigger items). DC for scrolls is 20 + caster level.

You may find some table variation from Auke's answers. It is legal, nothing prohibits personal spells, and you can use scrolls to recharge it. (You may find variation on other spell completion items, the ring of spell storing it is based on mentions scrolls and only scrolls.)

The question is whether the character using it has to be a spellcaster.

The distinction is whether the spell effect is cast by the item (command word or use-activated) or if it allows the wielder to cast the spell (spell completion or spell trigger). Almost all rings are command word or use-activated, but when I read the description of the ring it really, really, reads to me like the wielder is the one casting the spell (which would make it spell trigger).

It's very murky, and there's no clear dividing line between the two. I asked many years ago and got only a "No FAQ required" response. Although I believe it's spell trigger, with no official response I allow players to use such "grey area" items either way. But a GM may insist on one interpretation.

After finding contradictory listings in a couple places, I tracked down the PRD text. Below the table of Ioun stones, it says (emphasis mine):

PRD wrote:
Stored spells in the vibrant purple stone must be placed by a spellcaster but can be used by anyone (see ring of minor spell storing).

Thank you, Gino! That’s the first time I’ve ever seen that reference.

I had my information wrong in the other thread. I thought Adventurer's Guide had updated the stone so it is a minimum full-round action to cast, but that is the text from the flawed stone, not the normal or cracked one.

So yeah, it's a great item to use.

Thanks for posting that correction.

I'll go delete this from the list of 'things I know should change but i'm not ready to change so I'll wait until the PRD update forces me to change my PFS characters..'
