Ranged sneak attack while allies are flanking the enemy?

Rules Questions

So here is the situation.

Two of your melee friends are successfully flanking an opponent. Would a rogue within 30 feet be able to apply sneak attack with a ranged attack against said enemy?

This assumes the rogue is not invisible, currently in stealth or attacking the enemy while they are flat-footed. It only assumes the enemy is currently being flanked by the two allies engaging the enemy in melee.

No. It doesn't matter if the enemy is being flanked by other people, they have to be flanked by the rogue---which they aren't, since you can't flank with a ranged weapon.

Note that in the following purely melee situation:

(ally)(foe)(ally)
.....(rogue)......

the rogue also cannot sneak attack, as they're not in a flank. (You can take the Gang Up feat to make this work, though still only with a melee weapon.)

Thanks.

Hold up.

Would gang up work in this situation even if the rogue was making a ranged attack and they had this feat? It does't specify the character with the gang up feat needs to be in melee range.

No, it got FAQ'd (with kind of peculiar reasoning but IMHO a good conclusion).

Gang Up: Does this feat (page 161) allow you to flank a foe with ranged weapons?

The Gang Up feat allows you to count as flanking so long as two of your allies are threatening your opponent. The feat makes no mention of ranged attacks being included, and since flanking specifically refers to melee attacks, ranged attacks do not benefit from this feat. (JMB, 8/13/10)

Sorry, I should have referenced that when I brought up Gang Up before.

Fair enough. Makes sense since its prerequisite is combat expertise and from what I understand that is a feat that can only be activated during melee attacks.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The main take away is under no circumstances whatsoever does flanking gie any benefit to ranged attacks.* With Snapshot you can give the benefits of flanking to a melee attacker following normal position rules, but as a ranged attacker you are never considered to be flanking yourself.

*Barring some specific rule element that says it allows you to flank at range.
