Hi,
I haven't found anything on this topic in the forum, so what do you think is the best of the published APs so far?
Since I play the Rise of the Runelords AP (not the card game) with friends, I tend to chose an other AP for the Card game, but I really cant decide. I kinda like the S&S theme, but the other ones are also appealing.
I don't own a single card so far (only played a short session of RotR at a convention)
Oh, and please don't spoil :)
Which one is your favourite/should I buy?
Edit
Bonus question: Which are the quintessential Addons to get? I read something about class decks and ultimate wilderness etc?

1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Themewise they are very different so your own taste should prevail.
In terms of difficulty I would rank
RoR : easy
S&S : medium
WotR : hard (not for beginners)
MM : medium/hard
In terms of pure fun, I tend to think that they really improved each time (especially in terms of trying to make every scenario special) so MM would be my best one.
IMHO.

None are necessary unless :
- You play with 5-6 players, then the Character add-on relative to the specific AP you selected is a must.
- Some of your players really really want a specific class to play and it's not in the AP base box. Then if it is in the Character add-on relative to the specific AP, you should take that (because the character will be fine tuned to the AP). If not, take the class deck that covers the class you want to play (e. g. you want to play a witch, take the witch class deck obviously).
- You are a crazy over optimizing completionist deckbuilder or à 12-year old kid who just wants the +6 sword because, you know, it's SOOOO much better than the +5 one. In which case you can add to your previous choices one or more of the ultimate decks. But I would strongly recommend to rather save money and buy another AP when needed.
IMHO.
The 4 things you will need to buy though as soon as released (with the new improved PACG to come) to make the world totally spin are :
- The "classic banes" deck
- The races deck
- The "welcome to the planes" locations deck
- The Crimson Throne AP
(No pressure Mike :-)

Frencois summed up my opinion on the sets nicely.
If you are playing at home and not organised play I would just buy a base set and that sets character add on.Leave the ultimate decks and class decks until you either
* have played the base sets lots and want new characters / boons
or
* you want to play organised play at different locations. In which case you will need at least one class deck (and recommended to get an ultimate deck as well).

in the comments thread are a couple of posts by Tyler Beck (play tester / online play venture captain) with recommendations for class deck/ultimate deck pairings

One vote more to Mummys mask and character expansion for 5-6 players.
After that

With this ofcourse...

And for those maybe some character decks. Oracle is quite possible, then maybe Hells vengeage if you like shady characters, otherwice just what looks cool :)
I Also like Wrath, but that is much more difficult (and that wice my faforite ;)

I've finished RotR and SnS and I'm now almost done with Mummies Mask deck #1. I played Wrath but only a couple of scenarios and then the cards got damaged in a move and I'm not going to replace it (too much to do in other AP's...)
If you already "finished" RotR in the app and you're looking for the next one, I'd recommend Mummies Mask as well.
And I will give a +1 to Hannibal's recommendation as well:
Once you buy a box set and complete it (see you in a year or so...) You also could then buy and play the "Pathfinder Society Guild" adventure path for that box set when you've completed the path set that comes in the box.
Mummies Mask has 2:
Mummies Mask Seasons of the Plundered Tombs
and
Mummies Mask Seasons of Factions Favor
These are completely new adventure paths which use the Mummies Mask box set.
Then, when done (see you in... 2021 or so...), You could then get Skull and Shackles, which was also good, but didn't feel as polished to me as Mummy's Mask does.

So, Mummies Mask it is! :)
I'll grab a copy when I'm at the next rpg convention in 20 days.
Seems like these pathfinder society guild APs add to the replayability. Thanks for recommending them.
When I'm finished with MM I hope that Curse of the Crimson throne will be available.
btw: is there a way to get the APs a little bit cheaper? Maybe by buying them in a big bundle to get a discount or something?
Thanks for all the detailed information!
