inquiry - hiring private GMs

GM Discussion

Note: I am not soliciting applications (yet), but rather looking for general advice and information.

How would you recommend locating top-quality GMs in a local area, with the intent of hiring one for private sessions?

What sort of precedent exists for this sort of thing? I know there's a history of one-off arrangements, but with Pathfinder Society and other such organized play systems gaining popularity, it seems likely some sort of registries, rankings, maybe even pricing information may exist somewhere.

I can imagine (though not expect) a particular GM might provide a list of adventures (official or custom) they are intimately familiar with, maybe some indication of accessories (maps, miniatures, extra locale content, etc), or, if I might fantasize about over-the-top devotees, custom 3d dungeon layouts and terrain maps previously featured at convention events?

Ah, well, if I had no imagination, I wouldn't be here, now would I?

At any rate...which fir trees do you think I might find a wizard in?

A common issues since the days of Gygax vs. Arneson styles of games is that not all players and their GMs will mesh in their preferences on various gaming styles. While the normal advice is to make sure that you mesh with your GM &/ or gaming group this would be a bit more exacerbated if you add in a payment factor, especially if the players have differing (or even mutually exclusive) preferences in their gaming styles.

Most of these threads come from someone intending to try to start to charge to GM. If you are an exception and pondering hiring someone to GM for your gaming group, I'd recommend making sure you group knows what types of games, the styles of play they prefer, and that you have a plan for when things do not go according to preference. Once you've done that, then I would check with the local gaming communities about GMs who either prefer or can GM in the preferfed manners.

If you're looking locally the flat rolling surfaces map should get your started with who to ask around with.

Does your state have a website or something I can look at to update it?

Ask your local venture captain about who is awesome.

I got a gig for ~$150 a night for awhile this way.

3 people marked this as a favorite.

I'm clearly in the wrong line of business.
