Death and Spells

Rules Questions

Does death end your ongoing spells? Maybe the answer is as obvious as it would seem, but perhaps it's not. The rules don't seem to say one way or the other.
Obviously, spells requiring concentration would end since you couldn't concentrate on them. And many spells wouldn't be relevant even if they did persist. Arcane Eye, for instance. If it did persist, it wouldn't matter as you wouldn't be alive to perceive what it showed.
But what about spells that have ongoing effects independent of the caster? Call Cosmos, for example. On the first round it does its damage and then continues to create difficult terrain for 1 round/level. Does that effect end with the caster's death (or unconciousness for that matter)?
I guess the question becomes, does a spellcaster summon all the energy required for the full duration of the spell at the time of casting (thus having the spell become an independent effect) or does the spell require an unwritten, ongoing link with its originator?
My appreciation in advance for your input.

Good question. I feel like I've seen individual spells call out that if the caster dies or is unconscious, the effect ends early. So I think durations that don't require concentration hang around unless otherwise specified.

No. The vast majority of spells are 'fire and forget'. Once cast any magical energies have already been focused and packaged and set in motion. The death of the original caster has no effect on the spells they have already unleashed.

For example we had a wizard in our Pathfinder group who had greater invisibility, levitate, non detection and mind blank on themselves at the same time and they went down to a dragons breath weapon. We had to wait for their invis to run out before we could find their body. Luckily they stabilized on their own.

The exception to this is any spells which have an ongoing concentration requirement (and I don't remember any for Starfinder as opposed to Pathfinder) which DO end when concentration is ended or broken by an outside force as per the spells description.

Now spells where you can make decisions about how they are used after casting as you suggest will sit there and do the last orders given since the dead caster can no longer give active input, but they still exist til their duration's expire.
