Fickle Attack (Ex) and Extra damage dices

Rules Questions

Hello, I'm wondering if the Mythic Ability Fickle Attack applies on Sneak Attacks, Vital Strike, Studied Strike or any other additionnal damage dices on weapons.

Fickle Attack (Ex): Whenever you roll damage for a melee or ranged attack with a weapon or alchemical item, you can treat any natural 1s on the damage dice as if they were the highest possible number on those dice. You can select this ability up to three times. The second time you select it, treat 1s and 2s as the highest value. The third time, treat 1s, 2s, and 3s as the highest value.

I found this old thread that concluded that it does apply, but not many people replied and I'm uncertain of their conclusion. Even if I wish it does apply :)

The extra dice those things give you are definitely damage dice (as referred to in the rule "Extra damage dice over and above a weapon's normal damage are never multiplied"), so yeah, I'd say it applies to them.

Also, mythic abilities are supposed to be horribly OP, right? This wouldn't be if it didn't apply; even if you take it three times, it only changes d6 from an average of 3.5 to an average of 5.5. A +2 on each of your weapon damage dice is nice, but a +2 on each of your weapon damage dice and each of your sneak attack dice and your dice for flaming etc gets you some serious butt-kicking.

"Also, mythic abilities are supposed to be horribly OP, right?"

Yeah.. The more I look at it, the less I like Mythic Heroes. I see lots of unimmersive things with no explanation like: Can't take fall damage, do not need to sleep, do not need to eat...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

They're plenty immersive if you come at it with a certain mindset. If you approach it like typical high-fantasy, it isn't really gonna work for you. Mythic rules are for tall-tale, larger-than-larger-than-life-type settings where mighty heroes wrestle the bull that pulls the chariot of the sun across the sky and Schrödinger's Wizard really does exist. Maybe that's just not the type of game you're looking to play, and that's fine, same as avoiding occult classes because a game isn't really about psychic projections and past lives.

Just finished a Mythic campaign this past Friday/Saturday. It's been a pretty interesting experiment going up in Mythic Tiers trying to challenge them, and of course the best way to do that is with Mythic foes. The players had a blast with the Mythic system and have begged for it in the campaign upcoming in the New Year. My players aren't powergamers by any means, but they loved the idea of being larger than life heroes and used their Mythic abilities to help others rather than themselves.
