Unchained Summoner and Eidolon sharing items in slots

Rules Questions

Grand Lodge

My question is: Do Unchained Summoners and their Eidolons have to use the same items when they occupy a slot?

I think the summoner can wear a Belt of Mighty Constitution +2 while the Eidolon can wear a Belt of Giant Strength +2 with both enjoying the effects of the items.

One of my fellow DMs thinks they have to have the same items in the slot for them to work.

Also, I say the summoner must have an item in a slot in order for the eidolon to have an active item in the same slot. He says the exact opposite.

Could we get some clarification on how this works? Thanks in advance!

Quote:
A summoner and his eidolon share a mental link that allows for communication across any distance (as long as they are on the same plane). This communication is a free action, allowing the summoner to give orders to his eidolon at any time. In addition, magic items interfere with the summoner’s connection to his eidolon. As a result, the summoner and his eidolon share magic item slots. For example, if the summoner is wearing a ring, his eidolon can wear no more than one ring. In case of a conflict, the items worn by the summoner remain active, and those used by the eidolon become dormant. The eidolon must possess the appropriate appendages to use a magic item.

They can't both be wearing an (active) item in the same slot, even if it's the same item.

They also don't both benefit simultaneously from an item.

If the summoner wears a belt of Con, only the summoner gains a Con boost.
If the eidolon wears the belt, only the eidolon gains the Con boost.

They have one person's slots, split between two bodies.
And this means there are some tough choices to be made.
Souping up the eidolon means having a squishy summoner; protecting the summoner means having to scale back the eidolon's potential.

Personally, I'd tend toward the latter, since the summoner can weather the loss of the eidolon (and continue playing the game) better than the eidolon can weather the loss of the summoner.

Indeed.

Or paying the premium price (+50%), for magical effects in non-standard body slots, or layering extra effects on one item.

If you're unsure what we mean by this, take a look at the multi-stat boosting items (belt of Str+Dex+Con, etc), where this increase for the second and third stat has already been factored into the cost.

Since the eidolon can't wear armor, but the summoner can, it may be worth him looking into the specific armors and armor upgrades that he can benefit from, without affecting the eidolon's slots.
Maybe accepting the expense, to add an effect to the armor normally seen on vests, robes, or other torso items, freeing up a slot.

As always, these ideas should be discussed with the GM, who is the final arbiter of whether these slot alterations are feasible.
