At 2nd level, a Lantern Bearer selects a creature type from the following:
Aberration, animal, fey, humanoid (elf ), outsider (evil), and plant.
This ability functions exactly like the ranger class ability of the same name, and Lantern Bearer levels stack with other class levels that grant the favored enemy ability.
What exactly does this stacking bit mean? The favored enemy he takes here can stack with favored enmieis from ranger for total bonus, or he gets these and favored enemies as though he had progressed normall?

It means that you add the levels together to determine the strength of the favored enemy. So a ranger 8/Lantern Bearer 2 is considered level 10 when determining favored enemy bonuses and new enemies.
So a ranger normally gets a new enemy at levels 1, 5, 10, 15, and 20. The Lantern Bearer gets one at 2, 8 (from a limited list). So in our ranger/bearer example above, at level 10 you'd have a favored enemy from ranger 1, ranger 5, bearer 2, and ranger/bearer 10. You would get another ranger-based favorite enemy at lantern bearer level 7 (total level 15).
Normally class levels from prestige levels do not stack with other levels for the purpose of class abilities (for example, the above ranger/bearer would not get a ranger combat form bonus at level 10 because the Lantern Bearer levels don't stack for that Ranger class feature; only for favored enemy).

Resurrecting this one, because I'm really confused about how to handle this.
I'm currently a Ranger 5 with +4 vs outsiders (evil) and +2 vs humanoids (human).
For level 6 and 7 I'm taking Lantern Bearer. If I'm playing a demon hunter character, at Level 7 do I:
1) Take Outsiders (evil) as my species enemy for the lantern bearer class. Since it stacks with my ranger species enemy, I now have +6 vs outsiders (evil) and +2 vs Humanoids (human).
2) Take something other than outsiders, lets say Fey, getting +2 vs fey. Since this is my 3rd species enemy, I get +2 vs one of my previous enemies (taking outsiders) giving me a total of +6 vs outsiders (evil), +2 vs fey, and +2 vs humanoids (human).
3) Something else?
I've got like a month to get this right, but even after reading threads on the topic, I'm still not clear.
